Abstract(s)

The constant need to promote an improvement in the quality of highways and a consequent expansion of the transport infrastructure is directly connected to the needs of users, who seek for comfort, economy and security. To this fact, the objective is to promote an increase in the development and economic activity of nations. Given the expressive importance of highways, it is necessary to carry out an improvement and refinement of already existing design methods, in order to obtain more satisfactory results from the economic point of view and also from the structural scope, acting in a prevention of premature cracking of the layers. In the present work, an analysis of the expedited road pavement design method, proposed by the Infraestruturas de Portugal (ex-JAE) (1995), named MACOPAV (Pavement Design Manual) was carried out, in order to contribute to a refinement of the solutions proposed by it. In this analysis, and with this objective, several approaches and detailed researchs were carried out in the dimensioning perspective, based on the empirical-mechanistic method proposed by SHELL (1978). Based on this widely used and proven method, a study was carried out with the purpose of establishing a better relationship between variables used in MACOPAV in the expedient design and its solutions, in order to provide optimized final structures and well characterized as the final thicknesses of the bituminous layers. In this context, structural and economic analyzes were carried out, as well as obtaining relations that express cost-benefit by means of a relation between the price of the square meter of the floor and its respective value of resistant standard axes. In this way, the objective of this work is to contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of the flexible pavement structures dimensioned using the expedited method MACOPAV, besides contributing with the provision of more detailed information, in order to improve the interpretation and decision in practical situations of using the manual in question.
