Throughout history, women have always instinctively sought a vertical posture when giving birth, moving around, experimenting with different positions, avoiding the supine position to obtain a more comfortable position. These days, in developed countries, we attend childbirth with most of the women who adopt horizontal position. However, there is no evidence to support the benefits for parturients associated with this position. With this work we intend to identify, in the scientific literature, the effects of ambulation and vertical positions on the evolution of the 1st period of labor in primiparous women. We conducted an integrative literature review, obtained 722 publications in the EBSCOhost and PUBmed databases, between December 2018 and July 2019, applied the defined inclusion criteria: original articles; published online and in full text, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, freely available; mentioning primiparous women in the first period of labor; randomized studies. We have 8 articles for final analysis. The articles included in our review show that the advantages of the vertical posture in the first phase of labor have the following advantages: shorter duration of labor; less severe pain (less need for epidural analgesia and / or narcotic administration); lower rate of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns recorded on cardiotocography. This evidence gives the specialist nurse a key role in the application of these practices to enable women to make the decision and define their birth plan so that they can have the birth they idealize and want.pt_PT
