Abstract(s)
Contagious agalactia is a mycoplasmosis of small ruminants that causes mastitis, agalactia, polyar- thritis, keratoconjunctivitis and, occasionally, abortion and pneumonia. To better understand the epidemiology and the prevention and control of contagious agalactia in Bra- gança district, a cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the occurrence of the disease in sheep and goats from january 2020 to december 2021. An epidemiological questionnaire was applied to 108 flocks. The analysis of variables was performed using the chi-square method. A significance level of p<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. In this study, 28.7% of the flocks under study reported a previous diagnosis of contagious agalactia. The occurrence was higher in goat flocks (71.4%) (p<0.000). The occurrence was higher in mixed aptitude (58.6%; p<0.000) and in intensive production systems (80%; p=0.009). Surprisingly, the occurrence was higher in flocks were farmers had training in livestock produc- tion (45.8%; p=0.041). The results found in this study support current recommendations for the control of contagious agalactia in small ruminants. Special attention should be given to the assessment of the type of training and skills acquired in the management of farms in the prevention and control of the disease.
