Abstract(s)
During the years 2020 and 2021, the world was confronted with a situation never seen before in history, a pandemic that ended up bringing the world to a standstill, affecting it in every way, both on a personal and social level and in economic terms, although some economic sectors were more affected than others. The main objective of this study is to analyze whether the Covid-19 pandemic has affected companies in the freight transport sector in economic and financial terms. The aim is to carry out an economic and financial analysis of companies in this sector of activity, to analyze the impact that the pandemic has had. To this end, performance indicators such as Return on Equity (ROE), Return on Assets (ROA) and Economic Value Added (EVA) were used to determine the analysis of the results obtained. The analysis was carried out based on the last 7 years, between 2016 and 2022, to answer the main research question: “The COVID19 pandemic has affected companies in the freight transport sector in economic and financial terms?”. To complete the results of the study, a questionnaire survey was also carried out with Portuguese companies in CAE 49410, to understand whether the pandemic has caused any effects on these companies beyond the economic effects, such as: job creation/layoffs, relocation of companies, diversification of activity, operating model in the market, among others. The final conclusions of the study are that the pandemic has generally had a positive impact on companies in the freight transport sector, with a greater impact in the Alentejo region. It was also found that micro- enterprises continued to have greater difficulty in making a profit even after the pandemic compared to the other sizes.
