The QR code as a communication tool in cultural valorization: intercultural study between the cities of Bragança (Portugal) and Salvador (Brazil)
Publication . Gutierriz, Ives Emídio; Lopes, Isabel Maria; Rodriguez, Vanessa; Nunes, Alcina
This study aims to investigate, through the visitor's perception, the degree of adoption of the QR Code technology and how much it can contribute to keeping the local memory and culture alive. A quantitative research methodology has been adopted using an exploratory descriptive and inferential analysis of the data. Data has been collected using a non-probabilistic sample to which has been applied a questionnaire survey, in October and November 2019, under an intercultural study between the cities of Bragança (Portugal) and Salvador (Brazil). Out of the 503 respondents, 84.5% know the QR Code and 85.3% have already used this technology. Visitors demonstrate receptivity to the adoption of the QR Code ap-plied to culture by positively agreeing to use it for this purpose, even though the sample less frequently used it in tourist visits. It was found that the use of this technology can collaborate with the promotion of local tourism and social inclu-sion.
Using mobile apps and a digital restaurant menu to promote heritage in rural regions
Publication . Cunha, Carlos R.; Carvalho, Aida; Morais, Elisabete Paulo; Navarro, Bruno
Tourism is an area of vital interest to the Portuguese economy, having been, in 2019, the largest export economic activity in the country, accounting for 52.3% of services exports and 19.7% of total exports, having tourist revenues recorded an 8.7% contribution to Portuguese GDP (INE). Low density regions such as the territories of Vale do Côa, which, in their absence, would face great difficulties to develop are essential factors for development. The Tourism Strategy 2027 identified people as the main assets (single cross-cutting asset), differentiating assets (such as climate and light, history and culture; the sea; nature; water), qualifying assets (gastronomy and wines; events artistic, cultural, sports and business) and emerging assets (well-being, living). Tourism can take on a double dimension in these territories, on the one hand, constituting itself as a method of dynamizing and changing space, implementing new social and consumption patterns, generating new practices and multiple impacts, on the other, boosting local tourist resources (natural, heritage and cultural), beneficially contributing to the local economy. Promote Regions is a multidisciplinary challenge. This paper present a contribution-approach to promote regions heritage through a IT solutions based on mobile devices and making a restaurant digital menu a window to the promotion of reginal material and immaterial heritage, business promotion and cultural education, using the Côa Museum restaurant as a start point.
Stock market effects of corporate malpractices and misconduct: evidence from the short-seller Hindenburg
Publication . Albuquerque, Bruno; Martins, António Miguel Valente; Moutinho, Nuno
This study used event study methodology to examine the impact Hindenburg Research shortseller reports on targeted firms. The results show negative abnormal returns in firms when those reports reveal bad news about malpractices and misconduct. Our results show a higher negative stock market reaction to the Hindenburg reports when target firms are small, have higher leverage, higher Tobin’s Q, and corporate malpractice involves financial fraud. Our findings evidence that adverse information disclosed in the Hindenburg report led to a “torpedo effect”, resulted in sharp, immediate, and persistent share price drops.
Does CSR committee presence, stakeholder engagement, gender equality (SDG 5) and firm value influence ESG performance reporting? An EU pre and during Covid-19 analysis
Publication . Monteiro, Albertina Paula; Cepêda, Catarina; Borges, Ana Pinto; Vieira, Elvira Pacheco
This paper aims to analyse the corporate social responsibility (CSR) Committee presence and gender equality influence on environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance reporting in a pre- and during Covid-19 crisis in European Union (EU) listed entities. Design/methodology/approach – To achieve the goal, an empirical analysis was conducted with 1,221 listed companies in EU as support for the economics years 2017–2021. Statistical technique used to analyse the relationship between the variables under study was regression analysis with panel data. Findings – Results show that CSR committee presence, stakeholder engagement and gender equality are positively associated with ESG performance reporting, but the Covid-19 crisis and the book value per share do not influence the dependent variable. The model variables determine 99% of the ESG performance reporting. Practical implications – The results are useful for managers, governments and organizations in developing sustainability reporting standards. As companies navigate the complex landscape of sustainability challenges, integrating sustainable development goals into their strategies and ESG reports provides a roadmap for creating positive, lasting impacts on a global scale. Originality/value – This research covers listed firms from throughout the EU and the pre- and during-Covid era.
User's profile of thermal establishments: a literature review
Publication . Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Rodrigues, Cristina; Costa, Vânia; Alves, Maria José; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Vaz, Márcia; Nunes, Alcina
Contemporary society has an increasingly broad and holistic perspective on health and wellness. It is scientifically proven that thermalism perfectly combines these two aspects. It provides a better quality of life and a complete state of well-being, physically and psychologically. Several studies have been carried out over the years, reflecting a paradigm shift in the conception of thermalism establishments. For this reason, the sector's stakeholders need to be prepared and have the necessary knowledge to respond to the different needs, characteristics, and motivations of both usual and new thermal users to define better action strategies. In this context, the research's main objective is to present a literature review and content analysis on the thermalism topic, through the most recognised databases, exploring the offer, identifying its users’ profiles and pointing out some trends for the market. As a result of the analyses, the growing interest and relevance of thermalism in scientific production stand out, particularly in tourism, as a social science. There are several studies that present a direct link between thermalism and tourism activity. It is notorious that thermal activity has both a recreational and medicinal dimension, all over the world. Literature analysis has also revealed the power of thermal waters for the treatment of a wide range of diseases and health issues, related to different medical specialities. Although the more traditional thermalism is still very present, the most recent studies portray some gradual changes on the demand and supply side, with a constant adjustment of both. Particularly in the user profile, there is evidence of a rejuvenated, healthier and heterogeneous demand, with different motivations to frequent the thermal spas. On the supply side, it can be seen that these establishments are seeking to reinvent themselves in order to complement their basic offer related to medical dimension, also focusing on the leisure, to enrich the experience of their regular users and attract others. Regarding the expected trends, they are mainly related to 1) Increased demand for prevention, leisure and well-being dimension; 2) Changes in the user profile; and 3) High potential for tourism activity.
