- Balvia ecosystems product placementPublication . Costa, Bruno A.; Lopes, Rui Pedro; Lima, JoséTechnological advancement in medicine enabled humankind to surpass many difficulties and cure countless diseases. These solutions improve the quality of life and well-being for mankind. Non-adherence to prescribed medication is a problematic that decrease the overall quality of life and health, while increasing the costs of health care. It can have many reasons and the consequences can be dire. The project “Automatic pills dispenser device - SelfMed” aims to provide a solution for that problem. The project SelfMed envisions the creation of a machine that can store, organize and dispense medication in the proper quantity and time, alerting the user of the medicine and facilitating remote access to data. It is a smart and independent machine capable of communication with other systems, and with many security features. This work is in the scope of project SelfMed, further develops the pill dispenser prototype, creates a new scope for the solution, design the business base for the commercialization of the products. The solution being developed is an ecosystem that includes an automatic pill dispenser device, user interfaces, cloud system, a smartwatch application, and a service.
- SelfMed: an automatic Pill dispenser devicePublication . Costa, Bruno A.; Lopes, Rui PedroWith the evolution of medicine and associated sciences, humans have been improving the quality of life and extending it beyond expectations. One of the expressions of the development is the periodic intake of medicine, usually through a form of pills. This is more frequent with the ageing of the population. Non-adherence of prescribed medication is the problem caused by the failure of following thoroughly the prescription. It can have many reasons and the consequences can be dire. The project “Automatic pills dispenser device - SelfMed’’ aims to provide a solution for that problem. The answer is an automatic and smart pill dispenser device, capable of storing medication necessary for a month. This solution is focused on the elder population due to fact they are more prone to polypharmacy and the repercussion of non-adherence to them can be more devastating. This work is in the scope of the SelfMed project and intends to implement the first phase of the smart pill dispenser device. This will include the assembly of the hardware, the programming of the software and testing. However, before that, a background search will be made, to verify the non-adherence influence in the European Union (EU) population and the costs it brings to the citizens. Also there will be a testing of both software and hardware. In the end there will be a conclusion and indication of paths for the future. Part of the equipment, material and software developed during this work will not be presented due to the confidentiality issues.
- Medication dispensing system architecturePublication . Costa, Bruno A.; Paudel, Roshan; Jonker, Richard A.A.; Afonso, Inês Santos; Lopes, Rui Pedro; Lima, José; Mesquita, L.M.R.; Pereira, Ana I.Non-adherence of prescribed medication is a global problem that a ects many people. There are many factors related to this problem that contributes to further increase the problem and impact in a patient's life. It is proposed a system to assist in the management of medicine and the communication with carers. The system has many components that include mechanical components, electrical components and management system, and servers. It is intended to o er a system that can help reduce the non-adherence factors and the consequences in the life of the patients and their carers.
