  • Professionals’ perception about the guidebook Violence against the elderly in the family context
Publication . Novo, Rosa; Prada, Ana Raquel Russo; Fernandes, Teresa
The guidebook entitled "Violence against the elderly in the family context: support guide for professionals in the identification and signaling” was developed during the internship and supervision developed of the degree in Social Education at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança in collaboration with the Centre for Assistance to Victims of Domestic Violence in the District of Bragança. This guidebook accomplishes the following objectives: (i) to promote a greater articulation of networking; (ii) to contribute to self and hetero-reflection, in order to better develop professional knowledge and skills for the identification and reporting of violence cases, and (iii) to reaffirm the visibility of the victimization problem of the elderly in the family context. The guidebook is composed of eleven chapters, subject through a rigorous peer-review process and based on scientific and empirical evidences on violence against the elderly. This article has as main objective to analyze the results of the impact of the guidebook, among professionals, to deepen the "meanings" of it. Through the non-probabilistic sampling method, 104 professionals, who directly or indirectly intervene in the family context with the elderly in the district of Bragança, have participated in this study. The instrument used was an online survey drawn up for this purpose, implemented in 2017 after six months of the publication of the guidebook. The results show that, in general, the professionals value the guidebook published, both in terms of professional development and reinforcement of interinstitutional networks. It should also be noted that, only six months after the diffusion of this resource in the district, its impact was positively assessed, although 36,50% of the professionals had a neutral position towards improving their professional practice. However, it is convenient to point out that 56,70% of the surveyed consider this resource to be too theoretical in its organizational category, even though the authors have turned to simple, clear and accessible but substantive language. Another relevant fact worthy of special attention, including in future studies, is the fact that professionals have identified the own victims as an obstacle to the identification and reporting of abuse of elderly people, especially because of their denial, fear, guilt and dependency. The professionals seem to have an ‘outlook’ very focused on the victim, neglecting the contribution of other possible factors in breaking the silence pact that involves the dynamics of domestic violence towards elderly people.professionals.
  • Effect of a mobilization and active exercise program on the range of motion of bedridden patients with disuse syndrome
Publication . Fernandes, Teresa; Mendes, Eugénia; Preto, Leonel; Novo, André
Disuse syndrome is a disorder that is most often associated with acute or chronic disease complications. Despite disuse syndrome may affect all organs and systems, the impact of range of motion limitations caused by immobility on functional capacity to perform activities of daily living is often very severe. Mobilization and active exercise have beneficial effects that counteract the impact of immobility on the body. This study aims to assess the effect of a mobilization and active exercise program on the range of motion of bedridden patients with disuse syndrome. A quasi-experimental study was developed. The sample consisted of 26 persons that have been bedridden for more than six months at home. A mobilization and active exercise program was design, fitting patient individual needs and implemented 2 times/week for 2 months. Caregivers where trained to transfer the patient from bed to chair and to repeat active exercise every day. Data collection was performed before and after intervention, using the Barthel Index and a goniometer for range of motion evaluation. 26 participants, aged 77.19 ± 11.67 and bedridden for 18 months (18.73 ± 15.25) were enrolled, but only 24 completed the intervention program. There was a minimal difference in the sex distribution with 7.6% more women than men. Results showed a statistically significant increase on range of motion of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip and knee. There was statistical significance in plantar flexion but not on the dorsiflexion. Barthel Index score has increase significantly (28,65±21,28vs31,46±23,28; p=0,035) after the mobilization and active exercise program. A mobilization and active exercise program implemented regularly may contribute to improve range of motion of bedridden with disuse syndrome. Thus, based on these results, it is believed that the intervention of rehabilitation nurse was an added value, contributing to an increase in range of motion and independence of patients.
