  • Impact of service quality, brand image, perceived value, customers’ satisfaction and behavioural intentions in the traditional retailing in the North of Portugal
Publication . Veloso, Cláudia M.; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Magueta, Daniel
In the service sector mainly in the traditional retailing, customers and the employees are key actors in service interplay. The quality and performance of any service are dependent on customer expectations and the efficiency the company is able to serve its customers. The crucial point of customer satisfaction is to identify the important attributes, considered by customers as their needs and expectations. The purpose of this study is to suggest the adaptation of SERVQUAL in evaluating the perceived quality of service offered by traditional retailing, namely in traditional retail stores in the North Region of Portugal. The proposed conceptual model aims to analyse if: (1) perceived service quality (five dimensions of SERVQUAL) directly contribute to customer satisfaction, customer-perceived value and brand image; (2) brand image and customer-perceived value directly contribute to customer satisfaction; (3) brand image directly contribute to customer-perceived value; (4) customer satisfaction directly influences the intention to return and WOM recommendation (Word-of-Mouth communication intention); and (5) the intention to return has a direct impact on WOM recommendation. This research is of particular interest to the literature on the retailing and to the practitioners, since there are few studies in this field which apply to the Portuguese traditional retailing.
  • Innovation in micro and small enterprises: a conceptual proposal for research
Publication . Walter, Cícero; Veloso, Cláudia M.; Fernandes, Paula Odete
Micro and Small Enterprises (MSE) are considered the most dynamic and elastic forms of activity. In the economy, the foundation and development of these are important for the creation of the so-called "normal" economic environment. In the recent past it was enough for companies to meet their needs in a profitable way to stay in the market, but that scenario has changed dramatically. At present it’s necessary to be one step ahead towards the future, because the strategies that have worked well in the past are not guarantees of sustainable success. The key to longevity and business competitiveness lies in innovation. Accordingly, the main objective of the present research was to present a conceptual model of innovation research in Micro and Small Enterprises to analyze (1) the degree of innovation of Micro and Small Companies, (2) how the innovation presents itself in the MSE as a result of its business environments and (3) the determining factors of the innovation according to the geographical location. This research is of particular interest to Micro and Small Enterprises in developing countries, such as Brazil, given the greater relevance of innovation activities than innovation itself, and can provide subsidies for the formulation of innovation policies.
  • A methodology for the identification and assessment of the conditions for the practice of outdoor and sport tourism-related activities: the case of northern Portugal
Publication . Silva, Goretti; Correia, Alexandra I.; Rachão, Susana; Nunes, Alcina; Vieira, Elvira Pacheco; Santos, Sónia; Soares, Luís; Fonseca, Manuel José; Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Veloso, Cláudia M.; Carrança, Paulo; Fernandes, Paula Odete
Tourists’ demand for outdoor sport-related activities has been growing in the last decade, leading to the recognition of the outdoor tourism potential of the development of rural and urban areas where the activities could take place. While the literature has recognized this potential, its features and the existing conditions for its practice are often not fully comprehended, mainly due to the lack of measurement systems and performance indicators. This study addresses this gap by proposing a wide-ranging assessment matrix of nine outdoor-related activities, employing northern Portugal as a study area. Based on an exploratory qualitative analysis employing semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders (public, private and third sector), the main contribution of this study lies in the development of the outdoor tourism assessment matrix (OTAM) to collect data. The OTAM matrix aims to identify and assess the conditions, namely the infrastructure and resources, for the practice of outdoor and sport tourism-related activities within the sustainable development pillars. The nine matrices comprising the OTAM allow the identification of the places where the outdoor activities can be practiced, and the conditions under which they can contribute to the definition of the development strategies of outdoor tourism.
  • Toward a quality measure of angolan public higher education institutions to enhance organizational performance
Publication . Veloso, Cláudia M.; Lunga, Domingos; Fernandes, Paula Odete
Nowadays, Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are obliged to pursue the path of quality, not only because of the growing demand of society, but also because HEI are the driving force for competitiveness. As the knowledge society is increasingly demanding, it is necessary to measure and evaluate it. The use of a self-assessment tool, developed in Europe, Common Assessment Framework (CAF), allows the measurement of the quality of services provided in public administration. In order to evaluate the reliability of the application of the CAF model to Public Higher Education Institutions in Angola, a multivariate analysis it was used. The findings of this study show that the model can be applied with confidence to Angolan HEI. In addition, the CAF model can be a useful tool for HEI to help them get to know each other better and move toward the path of quality, in an endless search for continuous improvement translated into excellent organizational performance.

Publication . Scalabrini, E.C.B.; Correia, Alexandra I.; Fonseca, Manuel José; Nunes, Alcina; Veloso, Cláudia M.; Vieira, Elvira Pacheco; Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Silva, Goretti; Carrança, Paulo; Santos, Sónia; Fernandes, Paula Odete
Purpose: Outdoor tourism is a growing segment that still requires data for planning and management. Aimed to present the potential of the Geographic Information System (GIS) to improve outdoor tourism in the North of Portugal. To achieve this purpose, a case study was conducted on developing a Web-GIS in Northern Portugal. Methodology: Four steps were followed to develop the GIS tool with information about outdoor tourism in the North of Portugal. In the first step, municipalities in the North of Portugal sent information about outdoor activities. In the second step, the data were georeferenced and associated. In the last step, a Web-GIS was developed. Findings: The development of tools is an important source of support for tourism. This study identified that a tool such as the GIS could support a destination's decision-making and promotional processes, besides providing detailed information to the tourist and facilitating travel planning. Practical implications: GIS provides effective planning of outdoor tourism, once this tool allows an effective search of the tourist offer and, from the tourist's perspective, relevant suggestions of visits according to their location are presented, facilitating their experience in the region. Originality: Several studies relate to GIS and tourism, but there is still a gap in specific studies on outdoor activities. So, this study presents the importance of GIS to improve outdoor tourism in the North region of Portugal. Understanding this importance is essential in planning and managing tourism, helping further policymaking and marketing strategies.

Publication . Fernandes, Paula Odete; Santos, Eleonora; Nunes, Alcina; Ferrreira, Fernanda A.; Veloso, Cláudia M.; Fonseca, Manuel José
Measures that address the seasonality, one of the identified overtourism direct causes, allow making a critical reflection on the application of control policies and monitoring regional measures crucial on a sector with such importance at the regional development analysis. The measures should stimulate or reduce tourism demand during low or peak seasons, respectively, generating a better distribution of tourism flows and eliminating potential overtourism situations. Therefore, this chapter focuses on the development of a Gini Index to analyse the distribution of the seasonality in northern Portugal and through it control current public measures in practice and suggest the implementation of different and more effective policy measures. For instance, the ones that make a clear bet on outdoor tourism activities. It will be used in the Gini Index, by the tourists’ market of origin measured by the overnight stays in hotel establishments. The results showed the high seasonal concentration of tourist flows.
