- Designing actively ecure, highly available industrial automation applicationsPublication . Tanveer, Awais; Sinha, Roopak; MacDonell, Stephen G.; Leitão, Paulo; Vyatkin, ValeriyProgrammable Logic Controllers (PLCs) execute critical control software that drives Industrial Automation and ControlSystems(IACS).PLCs can become easy targets for cyber adversaries as they are resource-constrained and are usually built using legacy, less-capable security measures. Security attacks can significantly affect system availability, which is an essential requirement for IACS. We propose a method to make PLC applications more security-aware. Based on the well-known IEC 61499 function blocks standard for developing IACS software, our method allows designers to annotate critical parts of an application during design time. On deployment, these parts of the application are automatically secured using appropriate security mechanisms to detect and prevent attacks. We present a summary of availability attacks on distributed IACS applications that can be mitigated by our proposed method. Security mechanisms are achieved using IEC 61499 Service-Interface Function Blocks (SIFBs) embedding Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS), added to the application at compile time. This method is more amenable to providing active security protection from attacks on previously unknown (zero-day) vulnerabilities. We test our solution on an IEC 61499 application executing on Wago PFC200 PLCs. Experiments show that we can successfully log and prevent attacks at the application level as well as help the application to gracefully degrade into safe mode, subsequently improving availability.
- A review of agent and service-oriented concepts applied to intelligent energy systemsPublication . Vrba, Pavel; Mařík, Vladimír A.; Siano, Pierluigi; Leitão, Paulo; Zhabelova, Gulnara; Vyatkin, Valeriy; Strasser, Thomas I.The intention of this paper is to provide an overview of using agent and service-oriented technologies in intelligent energy systems. It focuses mainly on ongoing research and development activities related to smart grids. Key challenges as a result of the massive deployment of distributed energy resources are discussed, such as aggregation, supply-demand balancing, electricity markets, as well as fault handling and diagnostics. Concepts and technologies like multiagent systems or service-oriented architectures are able to deal with future requirements supporting a flexible, intelligent, and active power grid management. This work monitors major achievements in the field and provides a brief overview of large-scale smart grid projects using agent and service-oriented principles. In addition, future trends in the digitalization of power grids are discussed covering the deployment of resource constrained devices and appropriate communication protocols. The employment of ontologies ensuring semantic interoperability as well as the improvement of security issues related to smart grids is also discussed. © 2005-2012 IEEE.
- A review of architectures and concepts for intelligence in future electric energy systemPublication . Strasser, Thomas I.; Andrén, Filip; Kathan, Johannes; Cecati, Carlo; Buccella, Concettina; Siano, Pierluigi; Leitão, Paulo; Zhabelova, Gulnara; Vyatkin, Valeriy; Vrba, Pavel; Mařík, Vladimír A.Renewable energy sources are one key enabler to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and to cope with the anthropogenic climate change. Their intermittent behavior and limited storage capabilities present a new challenge to power system operators to maintain power quality and reliability. Additional technical complexity arises from the large number of small distributed generation units and their allocation within the power system. Market liberalization and changing regulatory framework lead to additional organizational complexity. As a result, the design and operation of the future electric energy system have to be redefined. Sophisticated information and communication architectures, automation concepts, and control approaches are necessary in order to manage the higher complexity of so-called smart grids. This paper provides an overview of the state of the art and recent developments enabling higher intelligence in future smart grids. The integration of renewable sources and storage systems into the power grids is analyzed. Energy management and demand response methods and important automation paradigms and domain standards are also reviewed.
- Synergies of operation, information, and communication technology for solving new societal and industrial challenges: future directionsPublication . Dai, Wenbin; Leitão, Paulo; Tsang, Kim Fung; Shi, Yang; Hancke, Gerhard; Shu, Lei; Behnam, Moris; Haase, Jan; Vyatkin, ValeriyThe world is facing a series of new societal and industrial challenges, such as continuously increasing costs in food and energy supply and a short supply of skilled labor. To solve these new challenges, operation, information, and communication technology is entering a new era with more focus targeted to cost reduction and energy savings. In this article, how innovative technologies including virtualization, low-code development, digital twins, and industrial agents can support and impact digital and green transitions is analyzed. In addition, how these technologies will help the security and sustainability of future industrial automation systems is also discussed.
