- Brazilian university students’ perceptions about bioeconomyPublication . Tomazini, Cecília Eduarda Gnoatto; Perondi, Miguel; Fernandes, António; Ribeiro, Maria IsabelNowadays, sustainability is a subject in vogue due to environmental disasters. Bioeconomy is considered as a means to achieve sustainability through the development of clean and innovative technologies that generate financial returns and social well-being. However, to be incorporated into concrete actions, Bioeconomy must have social acceptance and the factors that explain individual’s attitudes towards it. For this, an analytical, cross-sectional and quantitative research was carried out through the application of a questionnaire to a non-probabilistic sample for convenience of 220 Brazilian university students. Data was processed using IBM SPSS Statistics software, version 28.0. In this context, a linear regression model was developed. The results show that students are familiar with the Bioeconomy term (53.2%), having a very good or good knowledge level about it (47.2%). Furthermore, an association was observed between the residence area and study field with the knowledge level. Furthermore, the results show the existence of different motivations for supporting Bioeconomy, being the economic motivations more important than the environmental ones. Thus, the better the knowledge about Bioeconomy, the greater is its support but, even those students who do not recognize it, they support it due to the expected benefits that associate Bioeconomy with sustainability and green economy. Moreover, even with the country’s investments in science and technology, there is a need to incorporate the subject in the curricula of universities degrees.
- Exploring insights into the bioeconomy in strategic groupsPublication . Ribeiro, Maria Isabel; Tomazini, Cecília Eduarda Gnoatto; Perondi, Miguel Angelo; Fernandes, AntónioThe concept of Bioeconomy is associated with sustainable development changes both in production and consumption systems. For this reason, this research was carried out with the objective to describe the scientific production related to the different strategic groups’ perceptions about Bioeconomy and to group the existing literature into thematic clusters. Initially, in this bibliometric study, 67 articles were selected from the Scopus database based on the words “Bioeconomy” and “Perceptions”. Later, the VOSviewer software, version 1.6.18, was used to perform the bibliometric analysis. The results revealed the existence of four clusters. The first cluster included articles about Bioeconomy on the perspective of the timber strategic sector and of the different actors in the field of forestry action closest to the Bioeconomy field. The second cluster included articles related to the perception about Bioeconomy by Civil Society, in general, and higher education students, in particular, as well as their opinions on the importance of the forestry sector for the Bioeconomy. The third cluster comprised the articles that consider the Bioeconomy to be the innovative way to go to ensure the sustainability of the planet, therefore highlighting the importance of knowing the perceptions and raising awareness of all strategic groups to ensure the successful transition to the Bioeconomy. Finally, the fourth cluster included articles related to the consumer attitudes and behaviours regarding the acceptance of new biofood products resulting from the Circular Economy.
- From X to Z: examining generational differences in sustainable food consumption in PortugalPublication . Moisés, Cristiano; Tomazini, Cecília Eduarda Gnoatto; Fernandes, António; Ribeiro, Maria IsabelThe main objective of this research was to analyze the attitudes and sustainable purchasing behaviors of food products among Portuguese consumers from different generations. The study sought to identify statistically significant differences regarding ecological awareness, understanding of ecological issues, adoption of ecologically conscious purchasing habits and conscious planning of these purchases. Consequently, the research aimed to reveal sustainable attitudes and behaviors during the food purchasing process considering the generational factor. In order to achieve these objectives, a quantitative and cross-sectional study was developed based on a questionnaire adapted from Kuźniar, Surmacz and Wierzbiński (2021). Between September 2022 and the first half of January 2023, the questionnaire was applied to a non-probabilistic sample of 686 Portuguese consumers. Statistical tools such as the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to discern statistically significant differences between two and three independent groups, respectively. The results confirm that generation is a differentiating factor of sustainable attitudes and behaviors. Obviously, the discernible existence of statistically significant differences between Generations Z, Y and X with regard to ecological awareness, ecologically oriented purchasing patterns, and the manifestation of sustainable attitudes and behaviors during food purchases serves as a robust validation of this assertion. Furthermore, it was observed that Generations X and Y exhibited congruent attitudes and behaviors, demarcating them from Generation Z. With regard to depth of understanding around ecological issues and conscious purchase planning, similar attitudes were consistently observed across the three generational spectra under analysis.
- Generations X, Y and Z and sustainable attitudes and behaviors related to food purchasing: a quantitative and cross-sectional studyPublication . Moisés, Cristiano; Tomazini, Cecília Eduarda Gnoatto; Fernandes, António; Ribeiro, Maria IsabelThis research aimed to analyze attitudes and sustainable purchasing behaviors when purchasing food among Portuguese consumers of Generations Z, Y and X. Specifically, to identify statistically significant differences on the interest in ecological knowledge, level of knowledge of ecological issues, ecological purchasing habits and conscious purchasing planning and, consequently, sustainable attitudes and behaviors when purchasing food considering the generation factor. To achieve these objectives, a quantitative and cross-sectional approach was used. In this context, a questionnaire adapted from Kuźniar, Surmacz and Wierzbiński (2021) was used to collect the data. The data collection instrument was applied between September 2022 and the first fortnight of January 2023. Thus, primary data was collected based on a non-probabilistic sample for convenience that included 686 Portuguese consumers from Generations Z (n = 487), Y (n = 82) and X (n = 117). Later, the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to identify statistically significant differences between two and three independent groups, respectively. The results confirm that generation is a differentiating factor in sustainable attitudes and behaviors. In fact, the existence of statistically significant differences between Generations Z, Y and X regarding the interest in ecological knowledge, ecological purchasing habits and sustainable attitudes and behaviors when purchasing food, are proof of this. Furthermore, it was found that Generations X and Y had identical attitudes and behaviors, differentiating them from Generation Z. Regarding the level of knowledge of ecological issues and conscious purchasing planning, attitudes were similar in the three generations analyzed.
- Knowledge level and perceptions of brazilian university students about bioeconomyPublication . Tomazini, Cecília Eduarda Gnoatto; Perondi, Miguel Angelo; Fernandes, António; Ribeiro, Maria IsabelThrough the creation of clean and innovative technologies, Bioeconomics is a means of achieving sustainability. For this to happen, it needs to be incorporated into concrete social actions, gaining knowledge and social acceptance. In this sense, the main purpose of this study was to analyze the understanding and level of knowledge of Brazilian university students about Bioeconomy, understanding their expectations and the factors that explain their attitudes towards it. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis with the help of IBM SPSS Statistics software version 28. The survey recorded 220 responses, identifying that 53.2% of the respondents were familiar with the term Bioeconomy and 47.2% had a level of knowledge classified as good or very good. In addition, a correlation was identified between the knowledge area and the place of residence of the students and their level of knowledge, with different motivations for supporting Bioeconomy, with economic motivations prevailing over socio-environmental ones. Also, it was found that the level of knowledge and support for Bioeconomy are directly correlated, so the greater the knowledge, the greater the support for it. More, even those students who don't recognize the term Bioeconomy associate it with sustainability and the green economy. This study shows that there is a need to introduce topics related to Bioeconomy in universities and in Brazilians' daily lives.
- Stakeholders perceptions of bioeconomy: a bibliometric analysisPublication . Ribeiro, Maria Isabel; Tomazini, Cecília Eduarda Gnoatto; Perondi, Miguel Angelo; Fernandes, AntónioThe Bioeconomy, in addition to being considered a means to achieve industrial competitiveness, offers new approaches to deal with future challenges, replacing fossil fuels with sustainable and renewable fuels and resources. A bibliometric study was carried out to describe the scientific production related to stakeholders’ perceptions about Bioeconomy and to group the existing literature into thematic clusters. 67 articles were selected from the Scopus database based on the words “Bioeconomy” and “Perceptions”. The VOSviewer software, version 1.6.18 was used to perform the bibliometric analysis. Four clusters were identified. The first cluster comprised the articles referring to the perceptions about the Bioeconomy of the timber sector stakeholders and of the different actors in the field of forestry action closest to the Bioeconomy area. The second cluster included articles related to the stakeholders’ perception of the Bioeconomy, namely, Civil Society in general and higher education students in particular, as well as their opinions on the importance of the forestry sector for the Bioeconomy. The third cluster comprised the articles that consider the Bioeconomy to be the innovative way to go to ensure the sustainability of the planet, therefore highlighting the importance of knowing the perceptions and raising awareness of all stakeholders to ensure the successful transition to the Bioeconomy.
