- Editorial: advances in machine learning approaches and technologies for supporting nervous system disease diagnosisPublication . Rodrigues, Pedro; Bispo, Bruno; Freitas, D.; Marques, João; Teixeira, João PauloThe nervous system is essential for physical and mental health but is complex and delicate. As it can unfortunately be affected by several progressive diseases, an early diagnosis is often critical for effective treatment (Xu et al., 2022). The diagnosis of nervous system diseases traditionally relies on a combination of clinical examination, imaging and signals tests, and laboratory tests (Siuly and Zhang, 2016). However, these methods can be time-consuming, expensive, and not always accurate (Milligan, 2019). In an era marked by unprecedented technological advances in machine learning (ML), a computational tool that allows the identification of patterns in data that would be difficult or even impossible for humans, its application to assist in medical diagnosis emerges as a beacon of hope in the complex panorama of nervous system diseases. The Research Topic Advances in machine learning approaches and technologies for supporting nervous system disease diagnosis aims to shed light on the transformative role that ML-based approaches and technologies are playing in reshaping the way an ensemble of nervous system disorders are understood, diagnosed, and treated.
- Enhancing team engagement and notoriety for youth project tagline: strategies for gdbPublication . Rodrigues, Pedro; Afonso, Patrício; Rodrigues, Carolina; Ramos, Frederico; Serafini, Laís; Afonso, Carlos; Pereira, Fernando A.The proposed action plan, of the co-creation challenge, aimed at increasing engagement and notoriety of a sports team, specifically focusing on attracting young people and diverse audiences. PROBLEM The core issue addressed is the lack of engagement leading to a decrease in relevance, motivation, and revenue streams for the team. The proposed solution includes a multi-faceted approach involving a digital marketing plan, organization of an open day, and hosting e-sports tournaments. These strategies are designed to bridge the gap between the younger population and the team, develop new revenue streams, engage e-sports players, and diversify into other sports. This initiative represents a significant step towards revitalizing the team's presence and appeal in a rapidly changingsports and entertainment landscape.

- Footballer’s journey upgradePublication . Pereira, Fernando A.; Rodrigues, Pedro; Fernandes, Carlos; Teixeira, Fernando; Tebús, Jaimeley; Azevedo, José; Pawlak, Maksymilian; Khan, Muhammad SaudOur challenge, aims to improve the living conditions and safety of young football players who arrive in Portugal to play football professionally and who challenge financial and social instability. To develop a computer/mobile application that work as a platform for players who have a support group, work proposals and legal information about transfers / inscriptions in the League. There would also be a system for players to speak freely and anonymously about their experiences with certain agents / clubs.

- Nonlinear Analysis of the Hand and Foot Force-Time Profiles in the Four Competitive Swimming StrokesPublication . Bartolomeu, Raúl Filipe; Rodrigues, Pedro; Sokołowski, Kamil; Strzała, Marek; Santos, Catarina C.; Costa, M.J.; Barbosa, Tiago M.Human locomotion on water depends on the force produced by the swimmer to propel the body forward. Performance of highly complex motor tasks like swimming can yield minor variations that only nonlinear analysis can be sensitive enough to detect. The purpose of the present study was to examine the nonlinear properties of the hand/feet forces and describe their variations across the four competitive swimming strokes performing segmental and full-body swimming. Swimmers performed all-out bouts of 25 m in the four swimming strokes, swimming the full-body stroke, with the arm-pull only and with the leg kicking only. Hand/foot force and swimming velocity were measured. The Higuchi's fractal dimension (HFD) and sample entropy (SampEn) were used for the nonlinear analysis of force and velocity. Both the arm-pull and leg kicking alone were found to produce similar peak and mean hand/foot forces as swimming the full-body stroke. Hand force was more complex in breaststroke and butterfly stroke; conversely, kicking conditions were more complex in front crawl and backstroke. Moreover, the arm-pull and kicking alone tended to be more complex (higher HFD) but more predictable (lower SampEn) than while swimming the full-body stroke. There was no loss of force production from segmental swimming to the full-body counterpart. In conclusion, the number of segments in action influences the nonlinear behavior of the force produced and, when combining the four limbs, the complexity of the hand/foot force tends to decrease.
- Rionor - hi, we are herePublication . Pereira, Fernando A.; Rodrigues, Pedro; Alves, Francisco; Almeida, Hugo; Amaral, Lara; Luz, MarcoRIONOR (Western Iberian Network for a New Borderland Order), founded on 1 October 2016 in a small house on the Rio de Onor border, is a transnational Iberian association led by Raiano citizens from both sides of the frontier. It seeks to become a school of citizenship, promoting civic participation, building critical awareness of the surrounding social reality, and deepening cross-border cooperation between Trás-os-Montes, Castile and León, and Galicia as the most effective means to counter depopulation and revitalise these regions. RIONOR underscores the urgency of defending solidarity through active, democratic associations, encouraging citizens to devote part of their time to advancing the common good as the best path towards a fairer and more humane world. The Challenge: How can we amplify the voice of RIONOR’s population? How can we make its communication more impactful? How can every resident become an ambassador for the values of their land? Solution approach: To design a communication plan that strengthens RIONOR’s engagement with the Raiano population, its partners and political actors. To create a mobile application to enhance awareness and visibility of RIONOR.
