- An ICT platform to support cultural heritage in rural communities: the Viv@vó – living in the grandma's house case studyPublication . Cunha, Carlos R.; Carvalho, Aida; Afonso, Luís C.M.; Silva, Daniel; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Pires, Luís; Costa, Carlos Casimiro da; Correia, Ricardo; Ramalhosa, Elsa; Correia, Alexandra I.; Parafita, AlexandreTourism and manly experience and cultural heritage tourism are growing in tourist’s interests. Rural regions have an untapped potential for this slice of tourism industry. Also, rural regions have an enormous collection of ancestral knowledge. Unfortunately, all this knowledge typically is elderscentered and it lack effective processes of digitalization, storage and providing systems for that all this heritage can be perpetuated through future generations. From this base-thinking it was created a project case study limited to the Portuguese Northeast region, named Viv@vó – living in the grandma's house. This paper presents this project and what it has been achieved during the project development process.
- An SNMP filesystem in userspacePublication . Lopes, Rui Pedro; Pedrosa, Tiago; Pires, LuísModern computer networks are constantly increasing in size and complexity. Despite this, data networks are a critical factor for the success of many organizations. Monitoring their health and operation sta- tus is fundamental, and usually performed through specific network man- agement architectures, developed and standardized in the last decades. On the other hand, file systems have become one of the best well known paradigms of human-computer interaction, and have been around since early days in the personal computer industry. In this paper we propose a file system interface to network management information, allowing users to open, edit and visualize network and systems operation information.

- Application of data mining in a maintenance system for failure predictionPublication . Bastos, Pedro; Lopes, Isabel S.; Pires, LuísIn industrial environment, data generated during equipment maintenance and monitoring activities has become increasingly overwhelming. Data mining presents an opportunity to increase significantly the rate at which the volume of data can be turned into useful information. This paper presents an architecture designed to gather data generated in industrial units on their maintenance activities, and to forecast future failures based on data analysis. Rapid Miner is used to apply different data mining prediction algorithms to maintenance data and compare their accuracy in the discovery of patterns and predictions. The tool is integrated with an online system which collects data using automatic agents and presents all the results to the maintenance teams. The purpose of the prediction algorithms is to forecast future values based on present records, in order to estimate the possibility of a machine breakdown and therefore to support maintenance teams in planning appropriate maintenance interventions.
- Are enterprises from lagging regions digitally connected?Publication . Fernandes, Joana; Pires, Luís; Nogueira, Sónia P.This study focuses on how enterprises located on lagging regions are using online resources and how can they enhance their usage. Most companies have transitioned to the “online world”, however, in rural and more deprived regions, it is perceived that companies still have difficulties accessing some online resources or accessing qualified workers in ICT areas. As such, this paper focus on 29 enterprises from the northeast of Portugal, a recognized lagging region. In the context of an international project, CRECEER creation of business cooperation networks in rural cross-border regions between companies in the gourmet agri-food and tourism sectors, the use of ICT was analysed, what online tools were used and what could be done to improve their ICT use in their business. As a result, it was found that the majority of the companies only had a minimal investment in business online tools, they are not aware of the majority of cloud computing software, and they do not use it in their business. Even though the studied companies were willing to evolve digitally, they recognized the severe restrictions they had, namely the requirement of specific currently unavailable knowledge, the necessity of qualified workers that they couldn’t afford, and even the hardware necessity they couldn’t supress. It is clear that for these companies had it not been the CRECEER project, even the smallest changes and improvements, would not be achieved in a short period. It is rather crucial to have European funds dedicated to enhance the ICT competencies of these businesses.
- Are rural accommodation enterprises efficiently present online?Publication . Fernandes, Joana; Nogueira, Sónia P.; Pires, LuísThis study regards rural accommodation enterprises (RAE) and how much of their business is made online and what can be done to improve it. This work focus on 10 enterprises from the northeast of Portugal, since it is a more deprived and isolated region and far from the touristic centres. As such, these companies need to attract the visitors through their online presence. We analysed their use of ICT, if they had a digital marketing strategy and what could be done to improve their presence and their results through online marketing tools. It was possible to understand that the majority of the companies only have a minimal investment in online presence through the Booking platform and with their website. They do not work efficiently the social networks and they do not use, or know, most of the marketing online tools. As a result, even though the studied companies are willing to evolve digitally and to enhance their presence in a more efficient way, this is limited to the investment that is required since they all feel they cannot invest at the time. It is clear that for these companies and specially in these regions it is vital to bring European funds to help them evolve to the digital market in a knowledgeable and efficient way.
- Boosting cultural heritage in rural communities through an ICT platform: the Viv@vó projectPublication . Cunha, Carlos R.; Carvalho, Aida; Afonso, Luís C.M.; Silva, Daniel; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Pires, Luís; Costa, Carlos Casimiro da; Correia, Ricardo; Ramalhosa, Elsa; Correia, Alexandra I.; Parafita, AlexandreRural regions concentrate on themselves a very rich set of ancestral traditions. The perpetuation of such traditions has been achieved through transmission between generations. Unfortunately, all this knowledge is typically elders-centered and it lacks effective processes of digitalization, storage and providing-systems for that all this heritage can effectively be perpetuated through future generations that are digital-born. From this base, it was created a project case study limited to the Portuguese Northeast region, named Viv@vó – living in the grandma's house. This paper presents the ICT platform that was created in this project and some main achievements during the project development process. Tourism and mainly experience and cultural heritage tourism are growing in tourist’s interests. Rural regions have an untapped potential for this slice of tourism industry. Rural regions have an enormous collection of ancestral knowledge that we are responsible to deliver to future generations as an inheritance to which they are entitled.
- Consortium agreement template for virtual enterprisesPublication . Carvalho, José Dinis; Moreira, Nuno Afonso; Pires, LuísThis chapter addresses the contractual legislation problem as an integration problem within the virtual enterprise context. In order to address the problem in a real legal platform, we create an example of a consortium agreement template based on the existing Portuguese legislation. The legislation is no more than standard procedures and guidelines to address an organization’s formalization within the legal system and society. Looking through the existing Portuguese legislation, as an example, we found a way to legally fit virtual enterprises (VEs). Moreover, we propose a consortium agreement template as a preestablished standard agreement to legally support VEs before specific legislation is created. We propose that the enterprises, when joining a market of service providers, would automatically accept this consortium agreement template in order to more rapidly become a partner in a VE as soon as business opportunities arise.
- A decentralized predictive maintenance system based on data mining conceptsPublication . Lopes, Isabel S.; Pires, Luís; Bastos, PedroIn the last years we have assisted to several and deep changes in industrial manufacturing. Induced by the need of increasing efficiency, bigger flexibility, better quality and lower costs, it became more complex [1]. Enterprises had had the need to cope with market expectations, incorporating in their production philosophies new paradigms such as JIT- Just in time, MTOMake to order, Mass Customization, agile manufacturing or Lean Manufacturing, that allow them to satisfy markets with a big diversity of products and also big quantities, becoming therefore more competitive. All this complexity has caused big pressure under enterprises maintenance systems. Maintenance mission is to make equipment and facilities available when requested. Maintenance function, seen as a non value aggregator one, became more and more requested to contribute to cost reduction, based on bigger and consistent equipment reliability. This perspective is stressed when enterprises existing equipment has an advanced service life. It is expected a profusion of breakdowns at those scenarios and consequently a smaller usability of equipment driving to less productivity. From an economic perspective, maintenance function is seen to the enterprise as a cost [2]. In fact, experience shows that a major percentage of the overall costs of the business concerns with maintenance [3]. Considering this perspective, decreasing costs with equipment operationalization will increase maintenance productivity and consequently overall productivity [4].
