- Afetivo-sexualidade e compulsão alimentar: qual a relação?Publication .
- Affective sexuality in people with changes of eating behavior (CEB) – contribution to a sexual educational reflectionPublication . Pereira, Filomena; Ribeiro, Maria Isabel; Veiga-Branco, AugustaThe initiation and frequency of sexual activity are indicators of the human beings development, and seem to present with some behavioral changes in people with changes of eating behavior (CEB), replacing the act of eating for sexual pleasure, hiding his sexual desires and escaping enjoy sexuality. This phenomenon should be addressed when considering youth education. Access the epidemiological perspective regarding the initiation and frequency of sexual activity in people with CEB and percive if it can must or not must be considered in youth sex education programs policies. An exploratory study of quantitative character was developed in a sample of 218 patients of both genders (68.3% female and 31.7% male) aged between 18 and 65 years. Data were collected in several hospitals in the center and north of the country. The Data Collection Tools were the Sexual Satisfaction Index (ISS), (Pechorro et al, 2009) and the Binge Eating Scale (Freitas et al, 2001). In the whole sample were found 78 respondents without CEB and 140 respondents with CEB. Of these, it was verified that both sexual initiation is earlier as more severe CEB level: in moderate CEB is registered a mean of 19 years (SD = 4,161) and severe CEB is 17,7 years (SD=2.287). As regards the frequency of sexual activity, there are differences: respondents without CEB assume a sexual frequency two to three times per week and with CEB, once or twice per week, independent of whether the CEB is moderate or severe. The phenomenon of CEB took evidence of moderating variable, regarding the initiation and frequency of sexual activity in people with and without CEB. CEB modifies life style development in general and sexual and affective life in particular, relevant fact to be included in youth sex education programs policies.
- Affective-sexual relationships and eating disorders in obesity context - a systematic reviewPublication . Veiga-Branco, Augusta; Pereira, FilomenaIn human intimacy, affective-sexuality (Ambler, 2012) is variable which promotes physical and emotional well-being in intimate relationships, in general (Brigitta, 2004), and in obese, in particular. Apart from obesity as a risk factor for chronic diseases there is clear correlation between obesity and negative emotional states and vice versa (Kadioglu, 2009; Larsen, 2007). Some studies present a correlation between these two variables, showing body image and self-perceptionas two variables in sexual experience, particularly in female (Alba, 2013, Arcelus, 2012). This study aims at assessing the connection between affective-sexual relationships and eating disorders in overweight context from a sample of articles on this topic. according to the methodology PICO, it was conducted a research on electronic databases Pubmed and B-On, between June 9thand July 9th, 2014, with retrospection studies until January 2004. Keywords such as Sexuality, Obesity and Intimate Relationship were used as research strategies, in order to extract abstract and select studies. 74 studies were found and 10 were selected for final analysis. Studies present some controversies about those variables statistical relationships. Only 7 in 10 studies - samples from Italy, New Zeeland, Portugal, Canada and Iron- provide evidence of statistically significant associations between sexuality and obesity and 3 studies in 10 studies - with samples from Turkey and Romanyrefute previous data. It was found a reduced number of studies about the connection between sexuality and obesity. However, their results allow us to affirm that overweight and high body mass index (BMI) show adverse effects on sexuality in obese patients.
- Anthropometric profile of workers with different workplacesPublication . Leal, Cristiana Sofia; Neto, Sara; Pereira, Filomena; Ribeiro, Margarida; Almeida-de-Souza, JulianaBackground The eating habits are acquired mostly during childhoodin. However, somes factors such as work place, meal times, reduced physical activity, prolonged sitting at work, type of activity and the possibility of free food consumption may influence eating habits and consequently change the nutritional status of people (Martins, 2010 e Fisberg, 2006). According to Martins (2010), the pattern of obesity among different types of jobs or activities differs by gender, the prevalence of this pattern is higher in people whose work involves driving a car, because it is a sedentary activity, and BMI may differ depending on the type of job. Objectives To characterize the nutritional status of workers and verify the influence of different workplaces in the nutritional status. Methods Data collection was collected with workers at a company from Oporto to Portugal. Workers were classified according to their workplaces: crew chief (CRC), administrative, controller dock (CD), preparer order (PO), clerk of goods (CG), charger commodity (CC), responsible for department (RD), cleaner and a driver. The anthropometric profile was measured by body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and body fat percentage (%BF) obtained from the bioimpedance. Were used reference values proposed by WHO to categorize the BMI and WHR. The %BF was categorized according Gallagher et al. (2000). Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal–Wallis Test in SPSS 17.0. Results The sample was compose by 80 workers with mean age 34 ± 9 years old. Mostly workers were male (54 %) and their workplaces were: 45.0 % PO; 18.8 % CG; 15.0 % administrative; 6.3 % driver; 5.0 % CRC; 5.0 % CC; 2.5 % cleaner; 1.3 % CD and 1.3 % RD. Based on BMI, it was found that 42.5 % have Normal weight, 46.3 % Overweight and 11.3 % Obesity. Regarding the WHR, it was verified that 86 % of female and 5 % of male have central obesity. For the %BF, it was found that women is more overfat (31 ± 6 %) compared to men (19.2 ± 7.2 %). There was no difference between the median of the anthropometric measurements and the workplaces. Conclusion Through the preliminary results we conclude that the job does not influence the nutritional status of workers because there is no relationship between the workplace and anthropometric measurements.

- BMI and the perception of the importance given to sexuality in obese and overweight peoplePublication . Pereira, Ana Maria Geraldes Rodrigues; Veiga-Branco, Augusta; Pereira, Filomena; Ribeiro, Maria IsabelLiterature has been pointing towards obesity as the moderating variable of a depressive vicious cycle of self-esteem and self-image, with sócia] isolation, anxiety and depression. This in turn drives people to channel sexual pleasure into the pleasure of food, thus aggravating their condition of obesity even more and consequently causing a major negative impact on the individual's sexual life. Ojective: To assess the importance given to sexuality in obese and overweight individuals as well as assessing the existence of a correlation between these variables. Methods A quantitative exploratory study was conducted on 218 patients of both genders (68.3 % female and 31.7 % male) aged between 18 and 65. Data collection was carried out in several hospitais in the centre and north of the country. The data was collected by using the Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS). Results Among participants, 82.2 % were obese or overweight. Among the obese, 38.1 % registered a type l obesity; 16.4 % had type II obesity (severe); and 8.7 % had type III obesity (morbid). The obese revealed to be the ones who gave the most importance to sexuality, despite also being the ones who present the highest sexual dissatisfaction. Finally, the results show that there is a positive correlation, though weak, between sexual dissatisfaction and BMI. Conclusions Obese individuais are the ones who revealed the highest sexual dissatisfaction. Therefore, the cause of such dissatisfaction must be sought and valued as an issue related to obesity.
- Body image and overweight in adults obese female - what about Promotion Health Education?Publication . Pereira, Filomena; Ribeiro, Maria Isabel; Veiga-Branco, AugustaBody image and self-concept are of unique importance; with body weight having an impact on peer’s acceptance. In this sense, patients with higher BMI have more difficulty in their relations. In fact, the greater the dissatisfaction with their own body (especially in women) the lower is the frequency of sexual activity. A negative body image is often associated with refusal to live sexual experiences, which has as consequences decreased sense of subjective well-being in their lives. This research aimed to know the subjective perception of body image in obese and overweight women and study the association between BMI and body image. An exploratory and quantitative study was developed, based on a sample of 149 women aged between 18 and 65 years. Data was collected in various hospitals from northern and central Portugal having been used for this purpose, the Sexual Satisfaction Index (SSI) and Binge Eating Scale (BES). The results show that 46.6% of participants feel embarrassed about their appearance and weight. Of these, 31.1% feel disappointed and 15.5% feel a lot of shame and contempt, reasons why, these women avoid any social contacts. The perception of body image is all the more negative the greater the BMI. The results of this research, suggest Women with higher BMI seem to be subject to greater mental suffering, because they feel great discomfort in relation to their body. Feelings like shame and and difficulty in socialization are morbidities for subjective well-being. Considering the results and their implications, it suggests an investment in education for health promotion in general and in health food in particular.
- Body mass index profile in adolescents and its relation with weight concernsPublication . Pereira, Ana Maria Geraldes Rodrigues; Veiga-Branco, Augusta; Pereira, FilomenaThe percentage of obese adolescents has increased during the past years, which as lead the World Health Organization to consider obesity as the main epidemic of the XXI century. However, adolescents are not immune to body image and weight concerns. This sensibility regarding weight might be an asset, allowing a healthy eating behaviour. Objectives: Analyse the adolescent's body mass index (BMI); Evaluate the relation between the BMI and the weight concerns. Methods: Restrictive, quantitative and transversal study. By gathering a simple random sample, and considering a sampling error of 3.5%, a sample of 600 adolescents (44% of the male sex and 56% of the female sex) with ages among 12-18 years old and attending the EB 2/3 Schools, High Schools and Professional Schools from Bragança, was studied. The BMI was determined through the calculation ofthe ration between the measure of the body mass in kilograms and the height in meters, squared (mass (kg)/height (m)2), and classified with the criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For the collection of data regarding weight concerns, it was used a self-administered questionnaire adapted from Luciana Apetite et al (2010). For the statistics analysis, it was used the SPSS programme version 14.0 (2005) for Windows, Microsoft. Results: 7,2% of boys and 5,7% of girls, in lhe age group 12-14 years old, and 15,9% and 10,1%, respectively, in the age group of 15-18 years old, had overweight/obesity. At a 5% significance level, it was demonstrated that the BMI was statistically dependent oft he sex (et: 5. 171; vp: 0, 160) and the age group (et: 1,900; vp: 0,593). Also, 61,2% of boys and 83,6% of girls stated that they worry about their weight. The concerns regards weight are statistically associated to the BMI observed (et:17,225; vp: 0,001). Conclusion: The results showed that 23, 1% of boys and 15,8% of girls have a BMI above the recommended amounts and, also, that it is statistically dependent of weight concerns. From this point of view, the interventions among young people must be multifaceted, never forgetting the elements that constitute the human being (psychological and biological).
