Abstract(s)
With the increase in life expectancy and consequent aging, the result is an increase in functional limitations in terms of self-care. One must distinguish whether we help the elderly, or whether we harm them by replacing them in their tasks. In this field, only on the basis of the evaluation of each case is it possible to help and rehabilitate each of them in an individualized and adequate way, making them more aware of the practice of self-care. Objective: To evaluate the impact of the promotion of self-care, by the direct acting auxiliaries, on the self feeding and personal hygiene of the elderly. Methodology: The applied methodology was simple descriptive quantitative, of exploratory and longitudinal approach. The population comprised a total of ninety-four users, and the sample obtained was forty individuals, nine males and thirty-one females, using exclusion criteria through the use of the Barthel Scale. Self-care evaluations were performed through the application of the CIFI classification in two distinct moments, with a time lapse of three months. Results: The results show that there was a positive evolution with the encouragement of the elderly self-care practice, and there was a decrease in the final average of the first evaluation of the CIFI (78.3) for the second (76.3). More specifically, this reduction of the average is more pronounced in the feeding parameters, where the results are quite significant. In the remaining parameters, the results are more dispersed. Conclusion: After the intervention with the direct-acting care givers, it was possible to verify that the studied sample evolved in a positive sense, in a visible way, in the activities of daily living Eating and Drinking, and also, although less relevant, in the activity of daily living Bathing.
