Abstract(s)
This study aims to analyze the relationship between the sociodemographic profile of the informal caregiver (IC), the sociodemographic and clinical profile of the person being cared for, the dimensions of care and the levels of burden and empathy of the IC and the levels of empathy and burden perceived by the CI. Data was gathered by a questionnaire survey, the Barthel Scale (Araújo et al., 2007), the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (Sequeira, 2007) and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (Limpo et al. 2010). The nonprobabilistic sample includes 85 IC of an elderly person, residing in Portugal, mostly female (94,12%), married or in a fact union (60,0%), employed (61,18%) and whose average of ages is 52,86 years. It should also be noted that 40% of participants have a college degree. Most elderly people cared for are female (71,76%), with an average age of 85,07 years. In this study, 58,82% of the people cared for have a dementia syndrome and all are in a situation of dependence. The results demonstrate that younger ICs (aged 19 to 29 years) show lower levels of burden, and that the older the IC is, the higher the overall levels of burden. Caregivers of a younger elderly person have lower levels of burden. It is also noteworthy from this study that IC aged 74 to 84 years old have lower levels of empathy. The sociodemographic and clinical profile of the person being cared for is not related to the IC's empathic capacity. The existence of informal support is associated with lower levels of burden and empathy, while the existence of formal support at the Home Support Service is associated with higher levels of burden and lower levels of empathy in ICs. Results also show that IC with higher global levels of empathy and, in particular, cognitive empathy, have lower levels of overload. These results are analyzed considering the role of the Social Educator in the intervention with the IC of an elderly person in a situation of dependency.
