Abstract(s)
Most global environmental problems have directly or indirectly linkage to anthropogenic actions motivated by unhealthy attitudes of citizens towards the environment The study of attitudes towards the environment, is extremely essential to environmental preservation, and represents a valuable contribution to minimize the pressure of human activities on ecosystems. The present study had its beginning from the need to understand the attitudes of young people towards environmental issues associated with climate change and its interdependence with the socio demographic variables. The sample consisted of 300 young people from different educational backgrounds from the National College of Sao Tome and Principe. For the implementation of the survey c a new scale based on a pre-existing attitudes, was constructed using the literature review, due to lack of appropriate instrument to this study. Proceeded to analyse the attitudes of young people face socio demographic variables, the results showed no differences in attitudes among young males and females in relation to environmental problems. The students with higher levels of education showed more favourable attitudes to the environment. The younger had shown more favourable attitudes to the environment than older which comply with some studies previously carried out. Statistical analysis was performed concludes that young people have biocentric attitudes towards the environment, with 73 % of respondents displayed very positive attitudes towards climate change. The study also suggests new areas for future research as a way to further enrich the studies on environmental problems in Sao Tome and Principe.
