As infeções relacionadas com cuidados de saúde representam um desafio sério,
afetando a qualidade de vida dos pacientes, uma vez que muitas vezes estão ligadas a
doenças graves. Estas infeções são frequentemente causadas por um grupo de bactérias
patogénicas conhecido como 'ESKAPE', que inclui Enterococcus faecium,
Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas
aeruginosa e Enterobacter spp. Estas bactérias têm vindo a tornar-se resistentes a muitos
antibióticos devido ao seu uso excessivo e descontrolado, doses inadequadas e baixa
adesão às diretrizes de tratamento. Muitas destas infeções ocorrem em ambiente
hospitalar, onde os pacientes podem entrar em contato com esses microrganismos através
de superfícies contaminadas, como bancadas e camas.
Os produtos naturais têm sido usados desde a antiguidade para tratamentos devido aos
seus benefícios terapêuticos e à sua baixa toxicidade. Os óleos essenciais, conhecidos
pelas suas propriedades antibacterianas e antibiofilme, apresentam-se como uma
alternativa natural aos desinfetantes comerciais. Da mesma forma, as águas minerais
naturais possuem propriedades anti-inflamatórias, antimicrobianas e antibiofilme, devido
às suas características físico-químicas.
Este estudo avaliou a atividade antibacteriana e antibiofilme dos óleos essenciais de
Origanum vulgare e Thymus vulgaris, bem como da água termal de Chaves,
individualmente e em combinação, como uma alternativa de desinfeção de superfícies
contaminadas. As atividades antibacteriana e antibiofilme das amostras estudadas foram
analisadas pelo método de microdiluição e a determinação do crescimento bacteriano
através da leitura de densidade ótica e por citometria de fluxo, respetivamente.
Os resultados mostraram uma forte atividade antimicrobiana e antibiofilme, quando os
óleos essenciais foram combinados com água termal de Chaves, especialmente contra as
bactérias do grupo ESKAPE.
Conclui-se que a combinação destes produtos naturais é vantajosa, potenciando as suas
capacidades individuais, tornando-se uma opção viável para a desinfeção e limpeza,
incluindo a produção de soluções desinfetantes eficazes.

These infections are frequently caused by a group of pathogenic bacteria known as 'ESKAPE', including Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp. These bacteria have become increasingly resistant to many antibiotics due to their overuse and misuse, inadequate dosages, and low adherence to treatment guidelines. Many of these infections occur in a hospital environment, where patients can come into contact with these microorganisms through contaminated surfaces, such as countertops and beds. Natural products have been used since ancient times for their therapeutic benefits and low toxicity. Essential oils, known for their antibacterial and antibiofilm properties, serve as a natural alternative to commercial disinfectants. Similarly, natural mineral waters possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-biofilm, properties due to their physicochemical characteristics. This study assessed the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of essential oils from Origanum vulgare and Thymus vulgaris, as well as natural mineral water from Chaves, both individually and in combination, as an alternative for disinfecting contaminated surfaces. The antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities of the samples were analysed using the microdilution method, measuring bacterial growth at optical density, and flow cytometry, respectively. The results demonstrated strong antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity when essential oils were combined with natural mineral water, particularly against ESKAPE group bacteria. In conclusion, the combination of these natural products offers advantages by enhancing their individual capabilities, making it a viable option for disinfection and cleaning, including the production of effective disinfectant solutions.
