Abstract(s)

This study aims for the optimization of heavy metals removal processes using commercial ionic exchange resins Amberlite IR120, Lewatit TP207 and Amberlite XAD1180. A proposed design of experiments will be applied, varying, for each resin, the contact time, resin mass and pH value, which were considered as the parameters, in order to make a leachate adequate from the composting line of a mechanical and biological treatment facility into commercial fertilizers, which fit the heavy metals requirements of the European Legislation UE 2019/1009 for the elements Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, As, Pb, and Zn. Initial results showed that the addition of the resin Amberlite IR120 in the leachate does not affect the total organic carbon (TOC) content (2.81 %m/m), density (1.027 g/cm3), pH (7.30), conductivity (42 mS/cm) and nutrients content, which was intended concerning previous works with activated carbon and clays adsorbents, showing a clear selectivity to heavy metals removal with the ion exchange resins. The heavy metals analysis remains to be performed but shows a promising result to adequate the leachate into the heavy metals European legislation for fertilizers. The obtained parameters will be optimized using a response surface methodology to maximize the heavy metals removal with minimum effect over TOC, pH and nutrients.
