Abstract(s)
The present study, as a general objective, seeks to understand the perception of formal caregivers on the care of institutionalized elderly people with Alzheimer's dementia; And as specific aims: to know the profile of the formal caregivers of an IPSS in the county of Bragança; To identify perceived satisfaction in the performance of care for institutionalized elderly with Alzheimer's dementia; Identify perceived difficulties in care delivery; And to listen to the formal caregiver's projection of his or her own aging. It is a descriptive study of a qualitative nature, with participants as eleven formal caregivers, whose profession falls into the category of Auxiliary Technicians of Direct Action and Auxiliary Technicians of General Services, using the technique of semi-structured interview for the collection of data. The results show that the majority of the caregivers are female, are married and aged between twenty nine and fifty six years, and that half of the participants had the twelve years. At the level of professional practice, they range from two to fifteen years, with most of them pursuing their profession as a need to have a job. Although they recognize the need for specialized training, participants feel great satisfaction with the care provided to users with dementia, which derive mainly from their experience over time and interaction with colleagues, and from the focus on care of nature Instrumental and emotional. As for the difficulties that arise from the formal provision of care for people with dementia, caregivers identify the lack of time, the lack of knowledge of dementia, the interaction with the patient, especially with the behavioral disorders typical of the disease, such as agitation and aggression. Lastly, and given the projection of aging, the interviewees reveal, on the one hand, a discourse with a clear identification of non-protection, vulnerability and, on the other, a discourse of trust for the benefits of existing institutions. In conclusion the obtained results demonstrate the absolute need to improve the training of formal caregivers as well as the need to reduce the emotional burden and dimension of the same.
