Abstract(s)
The study on academic, social and cultural integration of Cape Verdean students in the City of Bragança aims to verify, to what extent, the academic, social and cultural integration of Cape Verdean students studying at Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (PIB) is a reality, listening to their economic difficulties and future plans. We started from the problem statement - Do the Cape Verdean students studying at PIB feel academic, social and culturally integrated? For the purpose of answering it, we set the following objectives: Identify what factors lead the Cape Verdean students to come to study at PIB; know the integration in a new host society, verify what type of support are provided by origin and host communities, so that the integration difficulties can be overcome, analyze how do these students live the experience of studying at PIB and understand the challenges and opportunities offered by this experience. The research model is rooted in a mixed- based methodology, quantitative based on a questionaire survey, by direct application and qualitative, by application of an interview with grid, to the President of African Students Association of Bragança (ASAB) which the content analysis allowed to understand the interviewee narrative. The participants' selection was done through a non- probabilistic, convenience sample composed by 56 students that have different majors at Higher Education School of Bragança (HES) and by the President of ASAB. The results obtained allowed us to verify that students from Cape Verde have had a considerable integration in the City of Bragança and with other young scholars from other nationalities. The factors that lead the Cape Verdean students to come to study at PIB are due to quality of instruction of the institution, but also because of the information that is conveyed in their home country, the support they provide and life quality in a welcoming city, where multiculturality is an evidence.
