Abstract(s)
Atualmente, muitas pessoas sofrem de stresse e ansiedade. O conhecimento
Nowadays, lots of persons suffer from stress and anxiety. Traditional expertise is a good source for research of new effective therapies regarding today’s medical care. Alternative/ complementary therapies are a possible solution for expanding the bid in this kind of care. The topic of this work about the use of natural products in aromatherapy is mainly focused in the population of Bragança, a Portuguese town, using aromatherapy in a clinical context. Our main purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy in the reduction of the stress and anxiety levels throughout the massage technic Effleurage. Thirty-six individuals, of both genders, have participated in the research, comprehending ages between 18 and 45 years old. They were divided into two groups: the first received a treatment consisting of a synergy of essential oils and “group aroma” massage (n=18). The other group, “control group” (n=18), received only the massage. Participants were evaluated as to anxiety and stress levels before and after the treatment by the stress and anxiety symptom scale. We compared results statistically with a significance level of 5% (p-value<0.05). The treatment consisted of 14 half hour sessions (one per week), using an essential oil synergy specially made of 60% of Lavandula angustifolia Mill and 40% of Matricaria recutita L. At the end of the treatment the findings showed aromatherapy to be effective to reduce stress and anxiety levels of the participants. “Aroma group” presented a significant decreasing of 12% of their stress level and 30% regarding their anxiety. On the other hand, “control group” showed a minor decreasing, of about 3% of stress level and 2.6% of anxiety level. Despite benefits of aromatherapy have been proven to reduce stress and anxiety, studies are still necessary in order to identify the reasons why these indexes diminish and to understand the chemical compounds and mechanisms interacting behind each essential oil, in order to improve the therapy.
