Abstract(s)
Portugal is a country where demographic aging continues to increase and, consequently, the number of institutionalized elderly people in need of care is increasing. Thus, it is important that the conditions provided in residential structures for the elderly (ERPI’s) are increasingly better and more effective. The consumption of a high number of drugs is a reality in the life of the elderly population and any type of errors related to the medication circuit, from prescription to administration, may put users' health at risk. Medication related errors should then be avoided as much as possible. The initial question of this study arises from the fact that it has been observed that many ERPI's in the region still manage their records manually, making this task more complex and time consuming for employees. Paper records can increase the risk of errors and decrease the quality of services provided. We started by conducting a study, in order to find out how medication management is carried out in different ERPIs in the region, and to verify whether the records are organized on paper or computationally. Questionnaires were administered in 12 ERPIs in the region, in the cities of Bragança and Valpaços, where it was found that most of these residential structures don’t have computer applications to aid medication management, and the management is still on paper. This was the biggest flaw in quality management found throughout the study and in order to try to overcome these limitations of the ERPIs studied, a computer application for Android was modeled, which can support employees in managing residents' medication, especially in the preparation and administration stages.
