Abstract(s)
frequentemente.

The initial sample was made of twenty inmates but it grew bigger as the project evolved and, in the end, it had thirtytwo inmates, in the several sports categories. All the participants were male and had ages between twenty-two and sixty-six. They took part in a ninety-minute activity, involving weight training and futsal, once a week. A questionnaire was applied to thirty-two individuals as a mean to evaluate the Project´s implementation at the Estabelecimento Prisional de Izeda and the effect it had in the inmate participants; the questionnaire was a closed-ended questions survey form with the exception of one of the questions about the most frequently practiced sport. In the beginning, the main goal was to know the participants' opinion about the physical, mental and social benefits of sports while the project was being developed; in a second phase the goal was to know the different types of behaviour related to playing sports and finally their opinion about the practice of sports in general. Considering the answers to the questionnaire regarding the benefits of practicing sports while the project was being developed it was clear that a large majority felt the benefits of practicing sports in different aspects. In one of the more relevant answers, important as a response to our problem and main objective, eighty-one percent of the inmates stated that practicing sports was one of the best ways to be socially included which made the activity a social benefit. Bering in mind the results, we can infer that physical activity in prison establishments and in general contributes to increase both the population’s well-being and quality of life. It brings benefits on different levels such as: physical, psychological, social economical and even environmental.
