Abstract(s)
conduzir à instabilidade postural do indivíduo.
Região do Nordeste Trasmontano.
queda estimado (p = 0,002).
quedas e melhoria do equilíbrio.
Introduction: Sedentary lifestyle associated with aging enhances morphological, biochemical, psychological and functional changes in the body, namely postural instability. The reduction of body balance can interfere with functional mobility, leading to a greater predisposition to falls, fractures and fear of falling again, especially in institutionalized elderly. Physical exercise (PE) as a component of rehabilitation programs takes on a preventive character and maintains the functional capacity of the elderly. Objective: To evaluate and compare the performance of institutionalized elderly people for the tasks of the Berg Balance Scale (BSE), before and after the implementation of a Rehabilitation Nursing program. Methodology: The sample consisted of 12 elderly people aged between 75 and 92 years, belonging to a Residential Structure for the Elderly in the Northeast Region of Portugal. The intervention included a physical exercise program, carried out with the frequency of two sessions per week, lasting one hour for each session, and for eight weeks. The evaluation of the elderly participants was carried out by means of a form, for the sociodemographic characterization, and by the application of BSE to assess the functional balance. Results: There was a significant improvement in the performance of BSE functional tasks after the rehabilitation nursing intervention (p = 0.002). Conclusion: The intervention performed proved to be adequate in decreasing the risk of falls and improving balance, however, it was not enough for the average score of the group of participants for BSE to pass the level of Risk of average fall / medium balance to the Low risk of falling / good balance level.
