dc.description.abstractBuildings are among the largest consumers of potable water worldwide. While residential water use has been widely studied, research on public buildings and schools remains limited. Higher education institutions rank among the top urban water consumers, often leading to significant waste [1]. Given their intellectual influence, they can propose and implement sustainable water management strategies, setting an example for society [2]. However, barriers such as limited knowledge, academic workload, staff resistance, and weak societal pressure hinder progress. Additionally, diverse water and energy end-uses complicate water conservation efforts. Despite these challenges, research indicates substantial water-saving potential in universities worldwide [2]. The present research is the first at the Polytechnic University of Bragança (Portugal) to address water sustainability, focusing on two student residences – one for male and the other for female students. Its main objectives are (a) to determine the water demand in both buildings; (b) to propose water use efficiency measures and analyze their feasibility and costs; (c) to evaluate the feasibility and viability of the combination of the proposed measures in (b) with RWHS installation for the flushing cisterns recharge.eng
