- Constitutive models for numerical analysis of the short- and long-term behavior of geosynthetics and mechanical damagePublication . Lombardi, Giovani; Lopes, Margarida Pinto; Paula, António Miguel; Pareira, António BastosThe objective of this research is to analyse the tensile response of geosynthetics, apply constitutive equations, and propose values for model parameters to represent the nonlinear behaviour of these materials in the short-term and the long-term. Data for specimens submitted to mechanical damage, abrasion damage, and mechanical damage followed by abrasion damage will be analysed. Nonlinear regressions of the experimental results will be performed to fit the load-strain curves to constitutive equations. For each geosynthetic, the results of damaged specimens will be statistically compared to those of the undamaged specimens to observe the influence of the induced damage on the tensile behaviour of the materials over time. Experimental results will be statistically compared with those obtained by the constitutive models to verify if the tensile properties and the model parameters are properly estimated.
- Influence of a TMD in Its control action of a SDOF frama with non-linear hysteretic behaviorPublication . Folhento, Pedro Leonel Pamplona; Braz-César, Manuel; Paula, António Miguel; Barros, RuiThis paper presents a parametric investigation concerning the control parameters of a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), with the purpose of reducing vibrations of a SDOF frame structure with non-linear hysteretic behaviour, when it is subjected to earthquakes and wind loads. A numerical model (MATLAB/Simulink) is implemented in order to obtain the structural response of a SDOF infilled wall frame structure subjected to two different acceleration signals and evaluate the effectiveness of the applied TMD when the value of its mass is changed. Four different hysteretic behaviour cases will be considered for the infilled wall frame structure. Based on the results obtained, the definition of the mass ratio between the TMD and the main structure will be crucial in finding the ideal performance of a TMD.

- Direct shear tests: experimental setup based on a labview approach – experimental results in a silty sand soilPublication . Junior, Issan; Paula, António Miguel; Gonçalves, José; Braz-César, ManuelThis work describes an experimental setup that was developed in order to automate the direct shear Tests, to characterize the strength of soils. This experimental setup assures repeatability in the data acquisition, avoiding human errors, mainly when the tests data vary with a high dynamic. The described setup is based on LabVIEW, LVDT sensors and a 16 Bit Data Acquisition Board. For the direct shear Test it was used an apparatus, covered in ASTM standard D-3080 / D3080M - 11, ”Standard Method for direct shear test on soils under consolidated drained conditions”. This paper exposes the applicability study of the direct shear test to an existing silty sand soil, from the city of Braganza, Portugal, with the purpose to verify the applicability of this test with this instrumented apparatus. The results obtained and de main conclusions are presented.

- Simplified methods to obtain efforts in the joint lines of metal connectors of wood trussPublication . Pinto, Nadine Martelozo; Braz-César, Manuel; Paula, António MiguelThis paper presents a simplified method to obtain the distributions efforts in the joint lines in a wood truss node connected by metal plates fasteners, as function on the efforts transferred by each wooden element to the connection node. Although this verification is simple to solve in cases of simple joint geometries and/or symmetrical loading in relation to the node. The problem becomes complex in cases where the connection is composed of more than one joint line, without axis of symmetry and/or cases in which the loads are not symmetrical in relation to the node. This work aims to verify and compare three method to obtain the distribution efforts in the joint lines. Method 1 is based on the static balance between the efforts in anchors and their distribution over the adjacent joint lines. Method 2 (fictitious line) was presented to obtain the distributions efforts in the rupture lines from the distribution of efforts into composite lines (ensuring the balance of efforts on the fictitious line and the transmission of these efforts to the various rupture lines). Method 3 (obtaining the distribution by numerical models, in this case the MEF) allows to obtain the distribution along the line(s) for any configuration and composition of this(s), in addition it also allows to introduce the real stiffness of the plate and consequently a more realistic deformation/stress. The checks are carried out through Eurocode 5 EN 1995-1-1: 2004 [1] and through the CSI (Combined Stress Index), which represents the structural efficiency, in order to conclude the veracity of the method.
