- Agents enabling cyber-physical production systemsPublication . Vogel-Heuser, Birgit; Lee, Jay; Leitão, PauloIn order to be prepared for future challenges facing the industrial production domain, Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) consisting of intelligent entities which collaborate and exchange information globally are being proclaimed recently as part of Industrie 4.0. In this article the requirements of CPPS and abilities of agents as enabling technology are discussed. The applicability of agents for realizing CPPS is exemplarily shown based on three selected use cases with different requirements regarding real-time and dependability. The paper finally concludes with opportunities and open research issues that need to be faced in order to achieve agent-based CPPSs.
- Key directions for industrial agent based cyber-physical production systemsPublication . Karnouskos, Stamatis; Ribeiro, Luis; Leitão, Paulo; Luder, Arndt; Vogel-Heuser, BirgitRapid technology advances and increasing digitalization bring new opportunities but also put new challenges to modern production systems. Industrial agent concepts and technologies can be used to address the needs of modern Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). To do so, their interplay, especially in industrial settings, needs to be better understood and assessed. Key directions for investigations that are relevant for industrial agent based CPPS are analyzed in this work, mainly the design patterns, interfaces between agents and CPPS, metrics to evaluate the quality of agent based CPPS, and distributed intelligence implemented in or by agents. Although efforts exist both in agent and CPPS domains, their amalgamation still has several aspects that are under-investigated, especially when considering large-scale systems of CPPS, and the proposed four directions discussed in this work, seem promising to address several of the key underlying challenges.
- Summer school on intelligent agents in automation: Experience and reflections from the second editionPublication . Ribeiro, Luis; Leitão, Paulo; Vogel-Heuser, Birgit; Barata, JoséSeveral research agendas worldwide are targeting the development of Industrial Cyber-physical Systems as the next generation of intelligent embedded devices with improved interaction capabilities. These devices, and their potential uses, are though to deliver a radical increase in system sustainability, reconfigurability and flexibility which is perceived to be the root of the so called 4 th Industrial Revolution. However such technical systems, at the envisioned revolutionary scale, do not exist just yet and require a convergent and multidisciplinary research and development efforts. The academia curricula are also, albeit slowly, adjusting to the emerging education requirements. The Summer School on Intelligent Agents in Automation is a joint effort from several researchers in core areas of the 4 th Industrial Revolution landscape to close the gap and promote advanced education in this context. This paper describes the implementation of the 2 nd edition of the event as well as the experience and reflections resultant from it.
- Summer school on intelligent agents in automation: Hands-on educational experience on deploying industrial agentsPublication . Leitão, Paulo; Ribeiro, Luis; Barbosa, José; Vogel-Heuser, BirgitCyber-physical systems constitutes a framework to develop intelligent, distributed, resilient, collaborative and cooperative systems, promoting the fusion of computational entities and physical devices. Agent technology plays a crucial role to develop this kind of systems by offering a decentralized, distributed, modular, robust and reconfigurable control structure. This paper describes the implementation of a summer school aiming to enhance the participants' knowledge in the field of multi-agent systems applied to industrial environments, being able to gain the necessary theoretical and practical skills to develop real industrial agent based applications. This is accomplished in an international framework where individual knowledge and experiences are shared in a complementary level.
- System architectures for Industrie 4.0 applicationsPublication . Trunzer, Emanuel; Calà, Ambra; Leitão, Paulo; Gepp, Michael; Kinghorst, Jakob; Lüder, Arndt; Schauerte, Hubertus; Reifferscheid, Markus; Vogel-Heuser, BirgitIndustrie 4.0 principles demand increasing flexibility and modularity for automated production systems. Current system architectures provide an isolated view of specific applications and use cases, but lack a global, more generic approach. Based on the specific architectures of two EU projects and one German Industrie 4.0 project, a generic system architecture is proposed. This system architecture features the strengths of the three isolated proposals, such as cross-enterprise data sharing, service orchestration, and real-time capabilities, and can be applied to a wide field of applications. Future research should be directed towards considering the applicability of the architecture to other equal applications.
