- Analysis of thermal patterns in the knee: comparative study between athletes and sedentary individualsPublication . This study aimed to compare knee temperatures between sedentary individuals and athletes and to evaluate differences between the anterior and posterior knee regions. A convenience sample included 32 men, 16 sedentary individuals (1.71 ± 0.05 m; 71.7 ± 11 kg; BMI: 24.5 ± 0.39 kg/m²) and 16 athletes (1.79 ± 0.06 m; 73.29 ± 11 kg; BMI: 22.84 ± 2.52 kg/m²). Temperature assessments were conducted using infrared thermography. The results showed that the posterior knee region consistently exhibited higher temperatures than the anterior region in sedentary individuals (p < .001) and athletes (p < .001). Sedentary individuals had lower knee temperatures compared to athletes, both in the posterior regions (right: p = .0006; left: p = .0035) and anterior (right: p < .0001; left: p = .0009). These findings highlight that physical training influences localised thermal responses, with athletes demonstrating higher average knee temperatures and a consistent temperature gradient between the posterior and anterior regions in both groups.
- Assessment of heart rate variability and infrared thermography in response to exercise-induced muscle damagePublication . The sample consisted of ten physically active men (22.5 ± 3.3 years) who had not practiced plyometric training in the 6 months prior to the study. After a period of familiarization and assessment of body composition, the participants underwent a plyometric jumping protocol, including jumps over a 50 cm obstacle and jumps from a 50 cm box, after a 5-min warm-up on the treadmill. Subsequently, the following assessments were performed: assessments included measures of rating perceived fatigue (RPF), delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), IRT and heart rate variability (HRV) performed at 24, 48 and 72 h after exercise. The RPF results showed a significant increase from baseline at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h after the muscle damage protocol. For DOMS, significant increases were observed at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h compared to baseline, with values notably higher at 24 h and 48 h than at 72 h. Thermographic assessments of the posterior thigh region showed a higher concentration of pixels in the warm zone at 48 h and 72 h compared to baseline, as well as at 48 h and 72 h compared to 24 h. Regarding HRV, the LF/HF ratio and %LF were elevated at 24 h and 48 h compared to baseline and 72 h, while %HF decreased at 24 h and 48 h relative to baseline. The exercise-induced stress increased warm-zone pixels and elevated sympathetic activity (LF/HF ratio and %LF) up to 48 h post-exercise. This was followed by a shift to increased parasympathetic modulation (higher %HF), indicating recovery. These findings underscore the utility of IRT and HRV in monitoring recovery and optimizing training.
- Financial investments and sports performance in major league soccer: A comparative analysis between market value, base salary and results in conferencesPublication . It finds that higher investments do not ensure superior outcomes. In the Eastern Conference, Cincinnati excelled with modest financial figures ($11.46M base salary, $13.20M Guaranteed Compensation, and €29.25M market value), while higher-spending teams like Inter Miami and Toronto lagged behind. Similarly, in the Western Conference, St. Louis City led with 56 points, despite a lower budget ($9.49M base salary, $10.51M Guaranteed Compensation, €23.03M market value), outperforming higher spenders like Seattle Sounders and LAFC. Correlation analysis revealed negative associations between points and base salary (-0.52) and Guaranteed Compensation (-0.61) in the Eastern Conference, while points in the Western Conference showed weak correlations with financial variables. The study underscores the critical role of financial efficiency over mere expenditure for success in MLS.
- Thermal stress and physiological responses in Brazilian jiu-jitsu athletes submitted to simulated fights in a hot environmentPublication . The study included 12 male athletes, comprising 11 black belts and 1 brown belt. The athletes were divided into pairs according to their categories and there were four 10-minute bouts with 10 minutes of rest between bouts in a covered environment, during the night, with an ambient temperature (TA) of 29.3 ± 0.5ºC and relative air humidity (URA) of 75.9 ± 1.1%. The variables heart rate (HR), lactate, gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi) and skin temperature (Tskin), hand grip, dehydration rate, total sweating and specific urine density were evaluated. HR, lactate and Tgi data were collected before starting the simulated fights (pre 1, 2, 3 and 4), immediately after the end of each fight (post 1, 2, 3, and 4). All other variables were collected during the baseline period, which corresponds to pre 1, and in the post-fight assessments (post-fight 1, 2, 3, and 4). There was a significant reduction in body mass post-fight compared to pre-simulated fights (p < 0.001). Despite ad libitum hydration, athletes transitioned from a euhydrated state to significant-to-severe dehydration by the end of the protocol. HR values were significantly higher post-fight (post 1, 2, 3, 4) compared to rest (pre-1) (p < 0.001). Blood lactate levels increased post-fight (post 1, 2, 3, 4) compared to rest (pre-1). Tgi increased significantly after the first fight (post 1, 2, 3, 4) compared to rest (pre 1) (p < 0.001) and remained stable until the fourth fight. Tskin showed a increase post-fight (post 1, 2, 3) compared to rest (pre-1) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The thermoregulatory mechanisms were sufficient to maintain thermal control during the simulated BJJ fights.
- Translation, Cross-Cultural Adaptation, and Validation of the Measure of Intermittent and Constant Osteoarthritis Pain (ICOAP) Measure into Brazilian Portuguese for Individuals with Knee OsteoarthritisPublication . This study aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the ICOAP into Brazilian Portuguese for individuals with KOA. Methods: A total of 133 individuals with KOA participated. Phase 1 involved the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the ICOAP into Brazilian Portuguese. In Phase 2, the pre-final version was tested, and in Phase 3, the final version was validated with 103 participants. Convergent validity was assessed using Spearman's correlation with the Numeric Rating Pain Scale (NRPS), the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), and the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36). Internal structure was evaluated through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses using fit indices: chi-square/degrees of freedom (chi 2/df), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), standardized root mean square residual (SRMR), comparative fit index (CFI), and Tucker-Lewis index (TLI). Internal consistency was assessed with Cronbach's alpha (alpha), and floor and ceiling effects were examined. A subsample of 53 participants was used to assess test-retest reliability through the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimum detectable change (MDC). Results: The ICOAP showed adequate fit indices. Reliability analysis demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency and test-retest reliability. However, only the constant pain domain exhibited convergent validity. Conclusions: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the ICOAP consists of two independent domains with good internal consistency and reliability. However, only the constant pain domain showed appropriate convergent validity.
