- The Aging Curve: How Age Affects Physical Performance in Elite FootballPublication . Objectives: This study aimed to compare variations in physical capabilities of professional football players by chronological age and identify peak performance ages. Methods: Data from 5203 match performances across 351 official games were analyzed, involving 98 male players aged 18–39 years. Physical capacities (speed, explosive actions, and endurance) were assessed using the Catapult VECTOR7 system. Results: showed that players over 32 years experienced declines in high-intensity and explosive actions, while endurance remained relatively stable with age. Peak performance occurred around 25.7 years for speed, 24.8 years for endurance, and 26 years for explosiveness. Conclusions: Overall, players aged 17–26 years demonstrated the highest physical performance, with notable declines observed in older age groups.
- Comparing physical, technical and tactical performances in the World Cup Qatar 2022Publication . Branquinho, Luís; França, Elias; Teixeira, José Eduardo; Valente, Nelson; Reis, Tiago; Thomatieli-Santos, Ronaldo Vagner; Forte, Pedro; Ferraz, RicardoThe main objective of this study was to compare the physical, technical, and tactical performances of the 32 teams that participated in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (TM) concerning the confederation to which they belong and the FIFA ranking. Key statistics from the 64 matches played during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (TM) were analysed. The data from these matches were encoded and calculated by a multi-camera optical tracking system (TRACAB Gen5, ChyronHego). Significant differences were identified between Rank 1-15th vs. Rank 16-35th and Rank 1-15th vs. Rank 36-61st for possession, total attempts at goal, total attempts on receptions in the final third, and ball progressions. However, defensive line breaks were different only between Rank 1-15th vs. Rank 36-61st, and ball progressions was only different between Rank 1-15th vs. Rank 16-35th. Africa and Europe national confederation showed significant differences (all p < .05) for possession, total attempts on target, total passes, total complete passes, passes completion, completed line breaks, and receptions in the final third, except for total attempts on target, whose differences are between Asian and South American confederation (p < .05). When considering the FIFA ranking and the confederations, there are significant differences key performance indicator of the teams.

Factors such as training intensity, volume, frequency, and density must be carefully managed to promote positive adaptations in athletes (2). The concept of training load is not merely a measure of the amount of work performed, it is a complex interplay of factors that can significantly influence an athlete’s performance trajectory (3). Understanding how to optimize training load is essential to maximizing athletic performance while minimizing the risks of excessive fatigue, injury, and overtraining, which can negatively impact an athlete’s performance and ability to compete and train effectively, as well as overall health (1).

The 14 articles in Volume II of the Training Load in Sport: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives Research Topic cover a broad spectrum of sports and methodological approaches. They collectively underscore that training load is not a one-size-fits-all constructs; instead, it must be tailored to the athlete’s sport, competitive level and physiological/psychological profile. This editorial synthesizes the key findings, re&ects on emerging themes and outlines directions for future research.
- Identifying Optimal Pitch Training Load in Elite Soccer PlayersPublication . This study had three goals: (1) identify whether there is an adaptation in match physical performance (MPP) in response to PTL throughout a congested season in elite soccer players; (2) identify whether MPP adaptation is specific to the coach’s PTL philosophy; and (3) identify the optimal PTL for MPP during a congested season. Over two seasons, we collected data from 11,658 PTL sessions and 3068 MPP data from 54 elite male soccer players. The PTL sessions were clustered in weekly training blocks and paired with MPP for statistical and machine learning analysis. Over the season, MPP increased in the mid-season and this trend decreased during the end-season. Also, MPP reflected the coach’s PTL philosophy. Further, using a machine learning (k-means) approach, we identified three different PTLs (and classified them as low-, medium-, and high-load PTL blocks). The high-load PTL block was associated with a higher MPP, while the lower PTL was associated with a lower MPP. PTL is closely related to MPP, and this change also reflects the coach’s PTL philosophy. Here, we report an optimal PTL that could be useful for soccer teams playing a congested season.
- Perspectives on player performance during FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: a brief reportPublication . This was due to fixture congestion at the start of the season and expected weather conditions during the competition. Thus, the main purpose of this brief report was to critically analyze the potential impact of changing the competition date and weather conditions on players’ performance. In addition, a brief description about the performance during the World Cup is also provided. For the research, the Web of Science, PubMed and SPORTDiscus databases were accessed using the primary keywords FIFA World Cup and World Soccer Cup associated with the secondary keywords match running performance, fixture congestion, fatigue and weather conditions. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 52 articles were considered for analysis. The results seem to indicate that although changes were expected due to the modifications made (i.e., the competition date and scheduling congestion), the performance of the players seems not to have been affected in terms of the analyzed indicators. Furthermore, it seems possible to identify some patterns in the behavior of the teams that reached the most advanced stages of the competition.
- Relationship between key offensive performance indicators and match running performance in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023Publication . However, the strategy adopted can influence match-running performance. This study aimed to verify the relationship between the key indicators of offensive performance and match running performance in FIFA Women ' s World Cup 2023 (2023-WC). Thirteen key offensive performance indicators were collected from 64 matches (from 32 national teams) with a multi-camera optical tracking system (TRACAB Gen5, ChyronHego). Possession, line breaks completed, receptions in the final third and ball progressions were negatively related to distance covered. On the other hand, goals, total passes, and defensive line breaks were positively associated. K-means cluster analysis indicates that the team that outperformed the above variables was the one that was successful in the 2023-WC. Therefore, the superior performance of some variables, such as ball possession and progression, may prevent athletes from covering greater distances. Teams that make larger pass exchanges and make more breaks in defensive lines may be asked to run more. There are specific key offensive indicators that are related to match running performance. This information can be useful for coaches in choosing the strategy adopted.
