- Efeito de dietas suplementadas com sardinha em conserva vs licopeno na prevenção da obesidade e da doença cardiovascular em ratos WistarPublication . Ramos, Cristina Isabel Carlos; Ferreira, Isabel C.F.R.; Bandarra, Narcisa Maria; Prates, José Manuel MestreThe main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of diets based on longchain fatty acids, omega 3 (N3) and omega (N6), particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (docosa-hexaneoic) and AA (araquidonic acid) for the prevention of obesity and cardiovascular disease. Diets were supplemented with canned sardines and the percentage of EPA, DHA and the ratio N3/N6 in liver, erythrocytes, and adipose tissue of Wistar rats wasdetermined. It was introduced a natural antioxidant that exists in the tomato, the lycopene, with the main objective to increase the beneficial effects of N3 and N6 fatty acids. The increased supplementation of sardines promotes the decrease of AA decreased in liver, erythrocytes, and adipose tissue. The increased supplementation of sardine (25 and 50%) promotes the increased level of EPA and the N3/N6 index in liver, erythrocytes and adipose tissue. The percentage of DHA increased significantly only in liver, erythrocytes and adipose tissue, with addition of 25% sardine. The incorporation of lycopene supplementation in the diets did not show any interference on the fatty acids, however, increased fatty acid supplementation of N3 PUFA (50% sardine) decreases the incorporation of lycopene in the liver. The diet supplemented with 25% sardine and lycopene appears to have a greater effect on cardiovascular diseases and prevention of breast and prostate cancer, because it ensures the optimal level of EPA, DHA and lycopene, all of them compounds/nutrients/substances favourable to health, particularly with scientific evidence supporting their benefits for the prevention for this diseases
