- Body image perception in elderly populationPublication . Flores, Pedro Miguel; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Monteiro, A.M.Body image perception can be defined as the individual representation of body appearance that undergoes through changes throughout life involving biopsychosocial factors. Body satisfaction refers to the assessment of each individual body as well as its attitudes and thoughts. With the stereotype of aging associated with disease, sexual impotence, mental illness, uselessness and loneliness among other factors, the elderly population is often negatively influenced with their body perception. Thus, with increasing age, morphological changes become more evident leading to a dissatisfaction with elderly’s body image. Physical activity represents an important factor to improve physical and physiological well-being, health, autonomy of elderly and as a consequence the positive body image increase. Despite the recognition of the importance of physical activity benefits, inactivity is prevalent in people over 65 years of age. To counteract this inactivity, professionals who deal with the elderly population must promote physical activities in elderly care institutions and make this a regular practice to give this population quality of life and to improve body perception and satisfaction.
- Effects of Eight Week High-Intensity Interval Training Program Followed by a Six Week Detraining on Healthy Adult Gym-UsersPublication . Branquinho, Luís; Gomes, Pedro Anselmo; Ferreira, Luís; Brito, Diana; Hattabi, Soukaina; Ghouili, Hatem; Sampaio, Tatiana; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Teixeira, José Eduardo; Forte, Pedro; Ferraz, RicardoThe literature has reported that high-intensity training (HIIT) can effectively improve maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max) and body composition (BC). Still, contradictory results are reported regarding its impact of HIIT training and post-period detraining on gym users. Objective: This study aimed to verify how eight weeks of HIIT affects VO2 maximum and BC in healthy gym users. Additionally, the effect of a six-week detraining period was verified. A group of 10 gym-users (mean ± SD age: 29.03 ± 6.18 years) volunteered for this randomized controlled trial (RCT). Method: A HIIT program that included exercises such as jumping air squats, burpees and jumping jacks was applied over eight weeks. After this period, a six-week detraining period was applied. To measure changes in VO2 max, the Queen’s College Step Test (QCST) was applied, while a bioimpedance scale was used to measure BC. Results: Eight weeks of HIIT seem to show a tendency to increase VO2 max and cause positive changes in BC (p ≤ 0.05) with the exception of two variables (i.e., fat-free mass and fat mass). Furthermore, the results suggest that 6 weeks of detraining may negatively affect gains resulting from the training program, particularly in VO2 max and body mass index (BMI) p ≥ 0.05. Conclusions: Eight-week HIIT program incorporating short-duration explosive exercises can positively affect VO2 max and BC in adult gym users.
- Literary Tourism: Literature Developments and Research Lines from 2015 to 2020Publication . Rodrigues, Cristina; Liberato, Dália; Esteves, Elsa Tavares; Sousa, Bruno; Liberato, Pedro; Costa, Adriano; Pereira, Carina; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Carvalho, PedroAlthough literary tourism is still an understudied field, the beneficial rela-tionship between tourism and literature is becoming very clear. Literary tourism involves the literary heritage of places, namely visits to sites related to literary works and the lives of writers. There are already some empirical studies that demonstrate the importance of this type of tourism as a guarantee of cultural enrichment of desti-nations and sustainable tourism practices. This tourism has begun to be explored in the development of tourism products and experiences, such as itineraries, or infras-tructures linked to literary heritage that increase the attractiveness and competitive-ness of destinations. This study analyzes literary tourism as a field of research and explores its state of the art through a bibliometric review that includes content anal-ysis. For this purpose, articles published in the period 2015–2020, identified in the Web of Science database, were analyzed. The results identify the main topics of these publications and their temporal analysis, the research methods and techniques applied, the case studies related to authors and works, also the geographies studied and some important insights on literary tourism that address different dimensions. Overall, this study provides a rich understanding of the contemporary study of literary tourism, in a particularly rich period in terms of scientific advances in this area, still under-expressed.
