Abstract(s)
In order to minimize the effects of climate change and promote the sustainability of the urban environment, it is increasingly important to promote policies for the efficient use of water, such as: (1) reducing consumption, losses and waste; (2) reuse and recycle water and (3) resort to alternative sources for nonpotable applications, such as the use of rainwater in buildings. This study arises from the need to improve the management of water consumption in an industrial pavilion located in the sub-region of Terras de Trás-os-Montes, Portugal. In this sense, to reduce the consumption of potable water in the pavilion, a solution for using rainwater is proposed, with four scenarios. Scenario 1 concerns to the replacement of water from the public supply system with rainwater, when refilling flushing cisterns. Scenario 2 includes scenario 1, adding the recharge of urinal flowmeters, also with rainwater. Scenario 3, considers both the measures of scenario 2, and the use of rainwater in “other uses”, that is, in washing the pavilion's pavement and industrial machinery. In scenario 4, the use of rainwater in “other uses” is proposed. Thus, in scenarios 1, 2, 3 and 4, proposing a rainwater harvesting system, with a reservoir with a capacity of 20 m3, 25 m3, 85 m3 and 60 m3, respectively, dimensioned in accordance with Brazilian standards and the guidelines of the technical specifications made available in Portugal by the National Association for Quality in Building Installations (ANQIP), it is estimated to obtain water savings of 15.38%, 17.37%, 78.06% and 62.12%, respectively. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the use of rainwater should be promoted. The proposed measures, if implemented, may allow for a reduction in the consumption of potable water in the industrial pavilion, and consequently a reduction in the value of the water bill and a reduction in the environmental impacts of industrial activity. They are also a contribution to minimizing flood peaks in periods of precipitation and the risks of water scarcity in the region.
