The adherence to Mediterranean Diet is associated with lower morbidity and mortality rates, and it is characterized by an abundance of plant foods, olive oil as the main source of fat, moderate high consumption of vegetables and fruits. This research aims to study the level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet in middle and high school adolescents. A cross-sectional, quantitative, observational and analytical study was performed and was applied, as data collection instrument, the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for Children and Adolescents (KIDMED), a tool to estimate the adherence of adolescents to the Mediterranean Diet by answering 16 questions. A sample of 449 adolescents, aged between 10 and 19 years, was selected from a school in the North. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). As other studies, the majority of individuals stands at a moderate to good levels in the adherence to Mediterranean Diet. However, 75.3% consumes less than two pieces of fruit per day, and only 26.9% consumes nuts, at regular intervals of 2 to 3 times per week. These results prove to be important in order to support a need of intervention on nutritional education, in order to obtain healthy eating habits.pt_PT
