Abstract(s)
Economic growth as a driver of tourism is the subject of several academic investigations. Tourism is influenced by several internal and external factors, and understanding these determinants can contribute to more assertive decision-making by the agents involved with the tourism sector. The objective of this article was to identify the impact of the environment and the economic situation on international tourism in Portugal. The results were obtained through an Autoregressive Distributed Lag econometric model. It was found that the rate of economic growth positively impacts international arrivals in the short and long-run. In addition, the effects of carbon dioxide emissions influence international arrivals negatively in the long-run, indicating that if environmental impacts do not diminish, the tourism sector will suffer. Based on the results of this investigation, public policy-makers and agents in the tourism sector are directly benefited by obtaining an empirical basis to assist their actions.
