Impact of traditional and modern beekeeping technologies on the quality of honey of Guinea-Bissau

dc.description.abstractGuinea-Bissau, located on the west coast of Africa, is a country with low human development, where beekeeping and its products can contribute to enrich the nutritional status of population and reduce poverty. The goal of this study was to support the development of beekeeping activities through the quality assessment of local bee products, such as honey, building conditions for commercialization at international markets. This is the first study in Guinean bee products. The botanical origin and chemical composition of honeys produced under traditional and modern beekeeping technologies was evaluated. A clear separation between the two modes of production was found considering the honey quality parameters. Guinean honeys fits the majority of the international standards, allowing its classification as nectar honeys. HMF seems the major handicap, indicating a need to improve processing and storage.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractGuinea-Bissau, situado en la costa occidental de A ´ frica, es un paı´s de poco desarrollo humano, donde la apicultura y sus productos pueden contribuir a enriquecer el estado nutricional de la poblacio´n y reducir la pobreza. El objetivo de este estudio fue apoyar el desarrollo de las actividades apı´colas mediante la evaluacio´n de la calidad de productos apı´colas locales, como la miel, para crear las condiciones ido´neas para su comercializacio´n en los mercados internacionales. Este es el primer estudio en productos apı´colas guineanos. Se evaluo´ el origen bota´nico y la composicio´n quı´mica de las mieles producidas con tecnologı´as apı´colas tradicionales y modernas. Se encontro´ una clara separacio´n entre los dos modos de produccio´n considerando los para´metros de calidad de la miel. Las mieles guineanas se ajustan a la mayorı´a de los esta´ndares internacionales, permitiendo su clasificacio´n como mieles de ne´ctar. El hidroximetilfurfural (HMF) parece ser el principal obsta´culo, lo que indica la necesidad de mejorar el procesamiento y el almacenamiento.pt_PT
