Abstract(s)
A literacia científica e a contextualização da ciência na história serviram de base para o presente relato
de prática. Tendo por base os trabalhos desenvolvidos pelo médico argentino Carlos Galli Mainini, na
determinação da hormona gonadotrofina coriónica humana (hCG), recorrendo à utilização de anfíbios,
os alunos puderam recriar um dos primeiros testes de gravidez baseados na determinação da hCG na
urina. O trabalho permitiu ainda refletir sobre as implicações éticas da utilização de modelos animais em
investigação científica, bem como sobre o impacto que o contexto social, económico, político de uma
determinada época pode ter sobre a evolução da ciência e o impacto desta na sociedade.
Scientific literacy and the contextualization of science in history have served as the basis for the present practice report. Based on the work of the Argentine physician Carlos Galli Mainini, concerning the determination of human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone (hCG), using male amphibians, the students were able to recreate one of the first pregnancy tests based on the identification of hCG in human female urine. This work also allowed us to reflect on the ethical implications of the use of animal models in scientific research. Moreover, to think about the impact that social, economic and political context have on a certain epoch on science development and its consequences on society.
