- Integrated and distributed manufacturing, a multi-agent perspectivePublication . Barata, José; Camarinha-Matos, Luís; Leitão, Paulo; Boissier, Raymond; Restivo, Francisco; Raddadi, M.There has been a large and rapid evolution in terns of the paradigms and technologies to support the development of distributed manufacturing systems and real-time applications. This paper starts with a survey of the main proposals in the area based on the experience gained by the authors in various fields pertaining to manufacturing device modelling, control and supervision, industrial messaging, production management and reengineering methodology. The rational for a multi-agent approach is discussed as the available technologies to support the development of agent-based applications are summarised. Finally an implementation of controlling agents in a flexible manufacturing system is described and discussed.
- Integration of automation resources in holonic manufacturing applicationsPublication . Leitão, Paulo; Boissier, Raymond; Casais, Francisco; Restivo, FranciscoHolonic and agent-based paradigms are very suitable in the development of distributed manufacturing control systems, taking advantage of their modularity, decentralization, and ability to support dynamic and complex system design features. However, the integration of manufacturing resources within the holonic manufacturing control applications remains a problem, because no efficient standard allows an easy, transparent and essentially independent integration. This paper proposes an integration process that allows the integration of automation resources independently from the holonic control application, using some concepts derived from the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) application protocol and implemented over a distributed object platform.
- Trends in agile and cooperative manufacturingPublication . Leitão, Paulo; Barata, José; Camarinha-Matos, Luís; Boissier, RaymondThis paper discusses the actual state of the manufacturing systems, focusing on the paradigms, requirements and problems for control and supervision. Based on the experience of the authors in those fields, a new approach to agile, distributed and cooperative manufacturing systems is presented and discussed. This new approach is based on a multi-agent platform that supports three main components: control and cooperation, communication, and re-engineering.
