- Characterization of seven medicinal species by the phenolic constituents of their hydrolyzed extractsPublication . Valentão, Patrícia; Areias, Filipe M.; Amaral, Joana S.; Andrade, Paula B.As a part & a project intitled “Technologies for the valorisation of medicinal plants from Entre Douro e Minho region” which was one of its aims the cultivation of species of high and constant quality, we are developing technologies for quality control applied to the species involved. As a first approach, and in order to know what kind of compounds were present, the methanolic extracts were subjected to alkaline and acid hydrolysis prior to HPLC analysis. The chromatographic separation was achieved using a P2 18 column and a gradient of water-formic acid (19:1) and methanol. A diode-array detector was used to monitor the effluent at 280, 320 and 350nm. On using this methodology 19 phenolic compounds (flavonoids, phenolic acids and coumarins) were separated and identified. Their distribution by the species analyzed was as follows: Centaurea eyrthraea: vanilic acid, ferulic acid, sinapic acid, 3,4,5 - trimethoxycinnamic acid, luteolin and apigenin, Hypericum androsaemum: 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, cafeic acid, quercetin and kaempferol; Lavandula officinalis: cafeic acid, ferulic acid, coumarin, herniarin, luteolin and apigenin; Lippia citríodora: luteolin, apigenin and diosmetin; Mentha piperita: o-coumaric acid, eriodictyol, hesperetin, luteolin, apigenin and diosmetin; Salvia offlcinallis: syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, sinapic aid, luteolin and apigenin.
- HPLC/DAD analysis of phenolic compounds from lavender and its application to quality controlPublication . Areias, Filipe M.; Valentão, Patrícia; Andrade, Paula B.; Moreira, Manuela M.; Amaral, Joana S.; Seabra, Rosa M.A reversed phase HPLC procedure is proposed for the determination of eight phenolic compounds (2-O-glucosilcoumaric acid, o-coumaric acid, rosmarinic acid, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, coumarin, herniarin, luteolin, and apigenin) in lavender. The chromatographic separation was achieved using a reversed–phase Spherisorb ODS 2 (5 μm particle size: 25.0 x 0.46 cm) column. From the several extractive solvents assayed, only ethanol was able to extract all the mentioned compounds. Best resolution was obtained using a gradient of water-formic acid (19:1) and acetonitrile. Ten samples were subjected to quantification, all of them showing a common composition pattern.
- Tetraoxygenated xanthones from centaurium erythraeaPublication . Valentão, Patrícia; Areias, Filipe M.; Amaral, Joana S.; Andrade, Paula B.; Seabra, Rosa M.Three tetraoxygenated xanthones, 1,6-dihydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyxanthone, 3-hydroxy-1,5,6-trimethoxyxanthone and 1,3,5-trihydroxy-2-methoxyxanthone, were isolated for the first time from the aerial parts of C. erythraea. Their structure were established by spectroscopic means and by comparison with literature references.
