Para um melhor conhecimento, foram desenvolvidos vários rankings que têm como função, a hierarquização das IES, ressaltando a sua importância na transmissão do conhecimento, a preocupação com o sucesso escolar e métodos pedagógicos. É de salientar, a importância em reconhecer que as IES são fulcrais no desenvolvimento socioeconómico das regiões onde se inserem. Quanto à realidade em São Tomé e Príncipe, não existem estudos, sobre o impacto económico das IES no distrito ou região onde se encontram efetivadas. Nesta ordem, o caso da Universidade de São Tomé e Príncipe - USTP, é bastante interessante, por se tratar de um estudo pioneiro. Para a mensuração do impacto económico da USTP, foi seguida uma abordagem quantitativa, assente na aplicação de um modelo de estudo do impacto económico das IES, baseado no modelo American Council on Education, que já foi testado em várias IES portuguesas e internacionais. Neste trabalho estimou-se que o impacto económico da USTP na região ascende a 1,85 milhões de euros. Este é um valor que está subestimado dado que apenas o impacto direto foi possível de ser calculado. Considera-se, portanto, que o impacto total da USTP é muito superior e bastante significativo no distrito de Água Grande e no seu desenvolvimento. Este tipo de estudo é importante para as instituições, para justificar os apoios estatais que recebem, para os responsáveis políticos, e para a comunidade em geral, pois reflete a importância das instituições de ensino superior na economia local.Over the years, there has been an increase in interest in measuring the socioeconomic impact of Higher Education Institutions - HEIs, with regards to the economic performance and quality of higher education. For better knowledge, several rankings have been developed that have the function of hierarchizing the HEIs, highlighting their importance in the transmission of knowledge, the concern with school success and pedagogical methods. The importance of recognizing that HEIs are central to the socioeconomic development of the regions where they operate is vital. As for the reality in Sao Tomé and Príncipe, there are no studies on the economic impact of HEIs in the district or region where they are located. In this order, the case of the University of Sao Tomé and Principe - USTP, is quite interesting, as it is a pioneering study. To measure the economic impact of the USTP, a quantitative approach was followed with the implementation of a HEI’s economic impact estimation model, based on the American Council on Education model, that was tested in several Portuguese and international HEIs. In this work it was estimated that the economic impact of USTP in the region reaches 1.85 million euros. This amount is underestimated since it was only possible to estimate the direct impact. As such, we believe that the total impact of the USTP in the region is considerable higher quite significant in the district of Água Grande and its development.
