O Município de Vagos é responsável pela gestão dos resíduos urbanos produzidos na sua área territorial do concelho de Vagos.
Em 2007 foi elaborado o Regulamento de Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos do Município de Vagos, e publicado em Diário da República, tendo em vista disciplinar e melhorar a gestão dos resíduos, a nível ambiental e a qualidade higiénica do município e de todos os cidadãos.
Este trabalho tem o intuito de propor alternativas à atual gestão do sistema de RU do Município de Vagos. Para isso, e partindo do atual enquadramento legislativo, e tendo em conta um quadro de sustentabilidade essencial para garantir níveis de qualidade de serviço apropriados é necessário analisar o atual sistema, e tentar melhorar as lacunas que se vão encontrando.
Atendendo a que o município de Vagos é essencialmente rural, é possível reduzir significativamente a quantidade de biorresíduos a recolher e a tratar, e que atualmente são encaminhados para aterro. Através da boa gestão doméstica e a possibilidade do autoconsumo de bens alimentícios, a população com a horta comunitária, com jardins hortícolas, com a compostagem e com a separação de todos os resíduos seletivos vai permitir que o município de Vagos consiga ser mais sustentável.
