Abstract(s)
This work intends to present some preliminary data about the study of traditional "curriças" (old buildings) of the northeastern region. "Curriça" is the local name for the building to housing of sheep or goats, breeding according rangeland grazing system. We have already listed over 500 "curriças" in the Bragança region. Buildings with more than 50 years, some have had maintenance, refurbishment or conversion works; others maintain its original construction. These buildings have singular characteristics in their constructive aspects, mainly as building materials, dimensions and its location. These aspects give the traditional "curriças" some interest as elements of local and regional heritage. Changes occurred in sheep and goats breeding systems, especially the increase in the number of animals per herd led to the construction of modern farm buildings, with better access, larger and modern facilities. Therefore, many of the traditional "curriças" were abandoned or rarely used, and their maintenance and conservation was neglected. Currently, about 45% of the listed "curriças" are in good condition (including those which retain the original construction and those that were subject to renovation works) and almost 25% of these traditional "curriças" are in ruin and unused. Traditional "curriças" may be of interest as elements of traditional architecture and regional heritage. Some "curriças" can be restored as shelter for sheep or goat. In many cases, the main reason of interest is in the place or their surroundings or landscape. Many of these "curriças" could be converted to another function, such as tourism, leisure, temporary shelter, or to support other activities
