Abstract(s)
The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a game species present in most of the national territory and is one of the game species most prized by hunters. The study area encompasses the transition between the northeastern plateau and the high douro vineyard region, in Portugal with great potential for this game species. Through the application of environmental education (EE), the aim of this study was to observe, inform and sensitize one of the oldest activities of mankind: hunting. A demographic study was conducted using the method of line transects in the Municipal Hunting Area of Peredo dos Castelhanos, Torre de Moncorvo, northeastern Portugal. Between June and July of 2014, six censuses / observations were conducted, covering 5 different paths. These data were treated DISTANCE 6.0 software in order to calculate the density of partridges in the study area. Population density was estimated as 0.149 partridges/ha, totaling approximately 500 animals in this area. Were also carried out surveys of the area hunters to better understand their profile and develop environmental education (E.A.) tools, in order to better inform and raise awareness among players of one of the oldest activities of mankind.Com the results it was found that the partridge population meets a misfit age structure, with high shortage of juveniles. Proposals are presented for habitat improvement in the study area as the need of cleaning of natural water points, cutting bushes and prepare proposals at EE level as conducting awareness campaigns or delivery of bags for cartridges collection to raise awareness throughout the population.
