Abstract(s)
In order to determine the evolution of carbon stocks in an area of northeastern Portugal, district of Bragança, Parish of Deilão, we studied the evolution of land uses over a period of 48 years. We used aerial photography coverages of the study area for the years 1958, 1968, 1980, 1992 and 2006 to build land use / land cover maps. From this mapping and several studies of biomass to carbon and vegetation, we estimated the values of biomass (above- and below- ground) and the carbon stocks present in this landscape. The results suggest that carbon stocks increased 360% over the period under study. By 1958, the landscape of Deilão fixed a total of 20,572 tons of C and in 2006 it amounted to 75,449 tons. Structural and functional changes in the landscape, particularly those related to the abandonment of agriculture and wildfires, significantly alter the values of carbon sequestered at the landscape level.
